Claudio Lodati was born in Turin, Italy, in 1954. In 1974, at twenty, he co-founded Art Studio in his native city with bassist Enrico Fazio, tenor saxophonist Carlo Actis Dato and drummer Fiorenzo Sordini, a quartet with no chordal instrument beyond Lodati's own guitar, built on a blend of free-jazz improvisation, folk material, noise and progressive-rock texture. Italian sources credit Art Studio as the first Italian contemporary-jazz group to work the European festival circuit on a sustained basis, and across its history the band played in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, England, the former Yugoslavia and Poland, as well as the United States, Canada and Senegal.

Art Studio's debut LP came out on Drums Edizioni Musicali in 1977. Five more followed on the Turin label CMC: Diagnosi (1978), Paralisi (1981), Presagio (1984), and Pensieri (1986); Presagio's own Discogs release entry carries no individual personnel breakdown at all, so it is listed here for completeness rather than treated as an independently confirmed Lodati credit. Onde followed in 1987 on Splasc(h), adding singer Tiziana Ghiglioni to the four-piece, and Off Limits appeared in 1997. Counted through Off Limits, that run of releases matches the "seven albums" figure given by Italian Wikipedia for the group. Two later reunion recordings extend the catalog further: Trenta_Live in Torino (2007, Splasc(h)), marking the band's thirtieth anniversary with singer Silvia Pellegrino added to the lineup, and Rendez Vous (2013, Caligola), recorded with saxophonist Francesco Aroni Vigone standing in for Carlo Actis Dato and pianist/singer Irene Robbins joining. The 2013 lineup change is disclosed here because Discogs' own release credits for Rendez Vous list no Carlo Actis Dato at all (see notes.md).

Parallel to Art Studio, Lodati has run two vocal-centered projects since the mid-1980s. Under the name Dac'Corda he released Voci (1988, Splasc(h)), Chance (1990, Splasc(h)), Corsari (1991, Splasc(h)) and Boiler (2016, Splasc(h)) — a project documented on Discogs across nearly three decades. Corsari features accordionist Antonello Salis and singer Maria Pia De Vito, was recorded at Ivrea Sound Studios in May 1991, and carries liner notes by the critic Stefano Zenni. A second, separate vocal partnership paired him with the American singer Ellen Christi: it began under her own billing on Dreamers (1990, Splasc(h)) and was formalized as Vocal Desires on Vocal Desires (1994, CMC) and Express (2006, Splasc(h)). The duo also took its music to Dakar, Senegal, in 2001, performing at the Daniel Sorano National Theatre alongside Senegalese musicians including bassist Habib Faye, known for his long tenure in Youssou N'Dour's band.

A second constant across Lodati's career has been a long-running two-guitar partnership with fellow Turin guitarist Maurizio Brunod, documented on three Discogs releases spanning seventeen years: Appesi Al Filo (1994, C.M.C. Records), Blue Gulf Stream (1999, Splasc(h), adding French vocalist Pascale Charreton) and Reunion (2011, Caligola). One composition from that partnership, "Mostar," co-written by Lodati and Brunod, has taken on a life of its own in the wider free-improvisation scene the two guitarists work in: it has been recorded at least six times since 1999 by leaders and ensembles that did not otherwise involve Lodati as a performer, among them the Genoa trio Enten Eller (on 1999's Melquiades with Tim Berne, the 2006 DVD Settimo Sigillo, 2012's E(x)stinzione and 2024's Lisistrata with Iva Bittová), Odwalla's Kratos E Bia (2002, featuring Billy Cobham) and the Massimo Barbiero Silence Quartet's self-titled 2003 album. On Massimo Barbiero, Brunod, violist Alexander Balanescu and pianist Claudio Cojaniz's 2009 album Marmaduke, Lodati is credited only as co-composer of "Mostar" and does not appear as a performer on the record itself, a distinction disclosed here rather than folded into a performance credit.

From the late 2000s on, Lodati's own output has run mostly in duo and solo formats outside Art Studio. Odes (2009, Palomar Records) is an all-original duo record with double bassist and cellist Giovanni Maier; Plot (2011, Setola Di Maiale) and Just Go There (2016, Setola Di Maiale) pair him with vocalist and electronics artist Rossella Cangini under the duo name Plot; Animal Spirit (2015, Setola Di Maiale) is a solo record on guitar, voice, loops and live electronics; and Apro Il Silenzio (2014, Setola Di Maiale) is a collective recording as part of the ensemble One Lip 5, alongside trumpeters Guido Mazzon and Alberto Mandarini, guitarists Nicola Cattaneo and Franco Cortellessa, bassist Giorgio Muresu, drummer Stefano Giust, vocalist Pat Moonchy and violinist Emanuele Parrini. His most recent Discogs-documented credit, as of this build, is a 2026 appearance on Mattia Zanlorenzi's Wanderlust (Dodicilune).

Teaching has run alongside all of it. Since 1988, Lodati has taught jazz guitar at Turin's Scuola Civica Musicale (Civic Music School) and at the "Antonio Vivaldi" Conservatory in Alessandria, matching this campaign's pre-vet note. His press biography also names collaborations with guitarist Fred Frith and reed player Louis Sclavis; neither could be independently confirmed via a Discogs release credit in this build's research, and both are reported here as circulating, press-sourced biography rather than confirmed sideman credits.

Lodati's music sits at the more abstract, textural end of the Turin free-jazz scene his own generation built. Where Carlo Actis Dato's own later bands lean into dance-floor grooves drawn from tango, Balkan brass and North African modal lines, Lodati's guitar work, heard across Art Studio's originally noise-and-progressive-rock-inflected quartet sound, the vocal-centered Dac'Corda and Vocal Desires projects, and the later electronics-and-loops solo and duo records with Rossella Cangini and on his own Animal Spirit, favors sound-collage, extended technique and live electronics over groove. The seventeen-year two-guitar partnership with Maurizio Brunod is the clearest single thread running through his catalog: an ongoing conversation between two guitarists from the same scene, working acoustic and electric instruments against each other rather than alongside a rhythm section.
