Dimitri Sillato is a Bologna-based pianist, violinist and composer who came up entirely through the conservatory system before turning to improvised music. He graduated in piano and composition with full marks from the conservatories of Bologna and Rovigo, studying under Mauro Minguzzi, Cesare Augusto Grandi and Paolo Aralla, and won the Bologna conservatory's "Felice e Luigi Magone" piano scholarship for the 2001/2002 academic year. He started violin at age nine and kept at it for more than a decade, training with Giovanni Adamo, William Bignami and Luca Fanfoni across the Bologna and Parma conservatories. The turn toward jazz came later and privately: by his own account, repeated consistently across his official bio pages, he studied "the languages of real-time composition, from African American jazz to free improvisation" one-on-one with pianists Fabrizio Puglisi, Enrico Pieranunzi and Stefano Battaglia.

His own recorded catalogue runs through Bologna's El Gallo Rojo, a creative-music collective and label, and is anchored by two working groups co-led with reedman Achille Succi. Dimitri Sillato Playground, a quartet with Succi on clarinet and bass clarinet, guitarist and drummer Giancarlo Bianchetti and bassist Alessandro Altarocca, recorded Periferiche Sospese (El Gallo Rojo, 2009). Dimitri Sillato Luminal, with Succi again on bass clarinet, trumpeter J Kyle Gregory and drummer Federico Scettri, made Schwarze Seele (El Gallo Rojo, 2013), reviewed by All About Jazz. He is also credited on the co-led trio record Tirodarco (El Gallo Rojo), alongside bassist Salvatore Maiore. In a separate, larger-ensemble credit, he played violin in Playground, the resident ensemble of Bologna's AngelicA Festival, on Eyvind Kang's Virginal Co Ordinates (I Dischi Di Angelica, 2003), a session that also credits Mike Patton on voice and electronics, making that specific recording, rather than any separate arrangement, the documented connection between the two.

Outside his own leader projects, Sillato works as a session pianist, violinist and arranger across a wide range of Italian recordings: piano on Marco Bittelli's Andrea (Pacific Coast Jazz, 2017), piano and violin on Pepe Medri & Timbuctù Orkestra's Sala d'Attesa (2001), piano on the spoken-word/jazz album Voci: Tre Grandi Poeti in Musica (sung and spoken settings of dialect poets Tonino Guerra, Raffaello Baldini and Nino Pedretti; Interno 4 Records/NDA Press, 2010), violin and effects on Alessia Obino & Cordas's Deep Changes (Caligola, 2016), and an arranging credit on Pepe Medri's soundtrack to the film Bérbablù. He is also credited with an appearance on Vinicio Capossela's Canzoni della Cupa (2016), one of the best-known albums in contemporary Italian songwriting. Beyond music entirely, he composes regularly for theater with director Elena Bucci's company Le Belle Bandiere, and he contributed to the score of Piero Messina's L'attesa (2015), the Juliette Binoche-led film that won the Golden Lion at that year's Venice Film Festival.

His own bio also lists collaborations with a longer roster of international names, including Jay Rodriguez, Marylin Mazur, Elliot Sharp and clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi, that could not be independently confirmed through a Discogs credit or any other independent source in this build's research (see notes). In 2018 he co-founded Istantanea, a Bologna-based collective of musicians and composers working mainly in contemporary classical music, and in 2020/2021 his solo prepared-piano piece "Interiors" won first prize in Madrid's Da_sh Editions International Composition Competition, followed by third-place finishes in the Shortnotes Music Perspective and Andrea Ceraso Rome awards.

Sillato describes his own music as a kaleidoscope built from three poles: contemporary composition, ethnic/folk material, and jazz, with multi-instrumentalism used for sonic research rather than display. That description matches the discography. Discogs classifies his own leader and co-led releases as Free Jazz, Avant-Garde Jazz and Free Improvisation. Periferiche Sospese's liner notes describe the music as an excavation, a "reverse spacecraft" digging down through "moss, damp earth, crushed stone" rather than reaching skyward, while his conservatory training and Istantanea's contemporary-classical focus keep pulling the same catalogue back toward through-composed writing. The two Succi-co-led records are the clearest statement of his jazz identity: dense, dark-toned free improvisation built around reeds, piano and a rhythm section rather than song form. His session work runs in the opposite direction, moving fluidly between jazz (Marco Bittelli, Pepe Medri), Italian songwriting (Vinicio Capossela), and outright noise/experimental rock dates for other Bologna-scene labels, which is consistent with a musician whose base is the conservatory and whose working life is jazz-adjacent improvised music rather than a single genre lane.
