Michele Rabbia is a percussionist, drummer and electronic-sound improviser born in Turin in 1965. He trained first at the Civica di Savigliano school and studied drums in Turin with Enrico Lucchini, then in 1986 (some sources give 1989) traveled to the United States, where he attended Berklee College of Music in Boston and took lessons with drummers Alan Dawson and Joe Hunt. Returning to Italy in the early 1990s, he settled in Rome and began the working life that has made him one of the most widely recorded percussionists in Italian jazz: a Discogs credit list running to 114 entries, most of them jazz sessions, spanning three decades.
In 1994 he co-founded Aires Tango with Argentine saxophonist Javier Girotto, a group whose recordings (Malvinas, 1996; Aniversario and En Vivo, 2002; Escenas Argentinas, 2004; Duende, 2016, with guest Ralph Towner) anchor the tango side of his catalog. His own duo and trio work with pianist Stefano Battaglia began the same decade and became one of his longest-running partnerships: Stravagario (2002) and Stravagario 2 (2004) on Via Veneto Jazz, the quintet date Atem (2002, with Dominique Pifarely, Vincent Courtois and Michel Godard), and then Pastorale (2010), his first ECM Records credit, recorded at Artesuono Studio in Udine and produced by Manfred Eicher. The trio Triosonic, adding double bassist Giovanni Maier to Battaglia and Rabbia, recorded Anything Your Little Heart Says in 2009, released in 2014, and Battaglia and Rabbia also self-released a trio session with Norwegian guitarist Eivind Aarset, In Memoriam (2015), ahead of Aarset and Rabbia's later ECM work together.
Maier became Rabbia's most frequent duo and trio partner outside the Battaglia axis, credited alongside him on We Are (2003), Bows' Wind (2006, with Roberto Bellatalla), Soft Wind (2011, with Roberto Cecchetto and Giovanni Guidi), Floating Lines (2017, with pianist Giorgio Pacorig), Verso Il Primo Maggio 2017 (2018, adding Giancarlo Schiaffini) and the duo record About Us (2020) on Maier's own Palomar Records. In 2013 Rabbia made his only outright solo leader album, Dokumenta Sonum (C.A.M. Jazz), a "multi-art" project combining percussion, electronics, turntables and video that he conceived, directed and performed alone, recorded at Artesuono in November 2011.
His second ECM credit, Il Pergolese (2013), paired him with singer Maria Pia De Vito, pianist Francois Couturier and cellist Anja Lechner on a commission from the Festival Pergolesi-Spontini of Jesi, reworking the sacred and operatic music of 18th-century composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi; it was recorded in Lugano in December 2012 and produced, like Pastorale, by Manfred Eicher. Rabbia and De Vito's association also runs through her groups Songs From The Underground (Mind The Gap, 2009) and the Roden Crater Project (Spark Of Knowing, 2012), and through the earlier quartet date So Right (2007, with pianist Danilo Rea and bassist Enzo Pietropaoli). A third ECM album, Lost River (2019), formed a trio with trombonist Gianluca Petrella and guitarist Eivind Aarset, recorded at ArteSuono in January 2018 and produced again by Eicher; reviewers described its fully improvised, electronics-inflected sound as "post-ambient."
Rabbia's catalog also runs through repeated duo and trio partnerships built to last: three records apiece with Norwegian percussionist Ingar Zach ([so-no-ro], 2019; Musique Pour Deux Corps, 2021; and a 2023 trio adding keyboardist Jozef Dumoulin) and with French violinist Regis Huby and bassist Bruno Chevillon (Reminiscence, 2018; Codex III, 2021; plus Huby's own later albums Inner Hidden and BLISS). In 2023 he joined double bassist Federica Michisanti's quartet, alongside French clarinetist Louis Sclavis and cellist Vincent Courtois, on Afternoons, named Musica Jazz's Top Jazz Album of the Year. His most recent release, In 2 (2025, Rogueart), is a duo with Roscoe Mitchell, a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, recorded at Studio Artesuono in May 2024 following a run of live duo concerts.
Beyond jazz proper, Rabbia has recorded contemporary-classical programs (In Nomine: Thinking Of Giacinto Scelsi, 2016, with pianist Ciro Longobardi and bassist Daniele Roccato, on the Stradivarius label) and appeared on Paolo Fresu and Daniele Di Bonaventura's large-scale Altissima Luce: Laudario Di Cortona (2018), a reworking of a 13th-century Umbrian sacred songbook with orchestra and choir. Press profiles describe him as based between Rome and Paris in recent years, while continuing to record and perform regularly in Italy.
Rabbia describes his own approach, in a 2022 il manifesto interview, as that of "a manipulator more than a swinger" - treating percussion as sound-sculpture rather than timekeeping, and seeking direct physical contact with his materials over conventional drum-kit technique. That sensibility runs through his catalog's two constants: a preference for free improvisation over notated material, heard across his duo and trio work with Stefano Battaglia, Giovanni Maier, Ingar Zach and Regis Huby, and an increasing reliance on live electronics alongside acoustic percussion, audible from Pastorale (2010) onward and central to his solo album Dokumenta Sonum (2013). His training bridges American postbop drumming (Berklee lessons with Alan Dawson and Joe Hunt) and a specifically European free-improvisation vocabulary, and his catalog moves comfortably between jazz, tango (Aires Tango), contemporary-classical repertoire (the Giacinto Scelsi program) and large-scale sacred-music projects (Il Pergolese, Altissima Luce), without treating any of them as a detour from the others.
