Marco Luparia is a Turin-born drummer, percussionist and composer who grew up studying classical percussion before discovering the drum kit and improvisation at age twelve. They trained formally in jazz: a bachelor's degree in jazz drums at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague (2016-2020), followed by a master's degree in jazz and improvised music, cum laude, at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (2021-2023), where they specialized in gamelan, electroacoustic composition and improvisation. Along the way they won prizes at the Krokus Jazz Competition, the Chantiers des Détours de Babel and the René Aarons Improvisation Competition, and received support tied to Keep an Eye Records, the same Dutch jazz-prize ecosystem that has backed other young Italian players on this site. Luparia now divides their time between Turin and Paris.

Their first major leader credit is Masnä (Autres Records, 2023), a hybrid sextet of three Italian and three French musicians - Federico Calcagno on clarinet and bass clarinet, Pietro Elia Barcellona on double bass, Sol Léna-Schroll on saxophone, Hector Léna-Schroll on trumpet and piccolo trumpet, and Clément Merienne on piano and prepared piano - recorded in Paris in October 2021 with Luparia composing most of the seven tracks and playing drums and glockenspiel. Masnä takes its name from the Piedmontese word masnada, meaning family or progeniture. In 2024 Luparia won a Fondation Jean-Luc Lagardère Musician Scholarship earmarked for the group's second album.

Two of Luparia's other regular bands sit closer to the working-trio format: Fade In, with Calcagno and Barcellona, released Live Fast, Die A Legend on the Portuguese free-jazz label Clean Feed in 2022, recorded at Jambona Lab in Livorno; and Anaphora, pianist Filippo Deorsola's trio with double bassist Jonathan Ho, released [Bloom] on the Swedish label Loumi Records in 2025, described by its label as an "athletic criss-cross between jazz and non-European musical traditions centered on wood-based piano preparation." Both records are Discogs-verified with Luparia on drums.

Luparia's practice reaches further than working jazz combos. They are a listed member of BlueRing Electronics, a large Italian electronic-music collective whose two 2023 EPs for Elli Records, Anarres and Athshe, are tagged Electronic and Experimental rather than Jazz; Discogs does not itemize which collective member plays on which specific track of either release. In 2025, after attending the group's workshops in Nantes, Luparia was the first outside musician invited to record with percussionist Will Guthrie's Ensemble Nist-Nah, a contemporary gamelan ensemble, on the limited cassette Ensemble Nist-Nah invite Marco Luparia. In 2026 they appear on drums, electronics and voice on IDUTYDU, the debut album by the Paris glitch-noise band FRANTX, which Discogs tags as both Jazz and Electronic.

Luparia has performed at Umbria Jazz, the Torino Jazz Festival and North Sea Jazz alongside the more experimentally minded ReWire festival in the Netherlands, plus dates across France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and Luxembourg. In Turin they founded QUOIS, an association supporting contemporary artistic exchange through residencies.

Luparia's own description of their practice - "composer, media artist and percussionist" working with "electroacoustic sensitivity, improvisation and various non-European musical traditions" - places them at the boundary of several scenes at once. Their formal jazz training (drums at The Hague, a cum laude jazz-and-improvised-music master's in Paris) anchors the free-jazz and free-improvisation end of that practice, heard most directly on Fade In's Clean Feed release, which Discogs tags Avant-garde Jazz, Free Jazz, Free Improvisation and Contemporary Jazz. Masnä and [Bloom] extend that vocabulary into chamber-scale writing for mixed horns, piano and prepared piano. Alongside the jazz work, Luparia's gamelan studies (deepened in the CNSMDP master's and put into practice with Ensemble Nist-Nah), their membership in the electronic collective BlueRing Electronics, and the noise-rock outfit FRANTX show a parallel, non-jazz thread in their output; the site tags them Free Jazz and Avant-Garde Jazz on the strength of the trio and sextet work specifically, not the electronic or gamelan projects.
