Danilo Gallo was born in Foggia, in Italy's deep south, in 1972. He trained first on classical guitar before switching to electric bass and double bass at the "Il Pentagramma" school in Bari, between 1992 and 1995, then rounded out that training with seminars and workshops while already working as a performer. By his own account he has since played roughly 2,000 concerts across every continent, in a touring and recording career now past thirty years.
His discography, Discogs-documented under a single unambiguous artist entity (ID 677455, profile "Italian jazz bassist, composer and music producer born in 1972"), runs across leader, co-leader, sideman and production credits. The rhythm-section partnership that defines the middle of that catalog is with tenor saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti: Gallo was the bassist, alongside trumpeter Giovanni Falzone and drummer Zeno De Rossi, in all five albums Bearzatti's Tinissima Quartet made between 2008 and 2020 (Suite For Tina Modotti, X (Suite For Malcolm), Monk'N'Roll, This Machine Kills Fascists, Zorro), a lineup that never changed personnel across twelve years. The same two musicians regrouped as a trio with drummer Stefano Tamborrino for Post Atomic Zep (doKumenta Music, 2023), a session of Led Zeppelin repertoire.
Gallo is also a founding member, alongside guitarist Alessandro Stefana and drummer Zeno De Rossi, of Guano Padano, an instrumental trio formed in 2007 that runs Ennio Morricone-style widescreen melody together with surf, tex-mex, folk and free-improvisation elements, and that has recorded for the American labels Important Records and Ipecac Recordings (Guano Padano, 2009; 2, 2012; Americana, 2014; Back And Forth, featuring Bill Frisell and Sam Amidon, 2021). In 2025 the trio recorded a full album with trumpeter Enrico Rava, released as La Giostra (Hora Records) and billed to "Guano Padano Plays With Enrico Rava," with Alfonso Santimone contributing a co-written track, "Lynch."
Since 2016 his own leader project has been Dark Dry Tears, a quartet whose albums Thinking Beats Where Mind Dies (Parco della Musica Records, 2016), Hide, Show Yourself! (Parco della Musica Records, 2020) and A View Through a Slot (Clean Feed, 2021) place him as composer, arranger and bandleader; per his own artist CV, the group topped Musica Jazz's Italian Top Jazz poll as well as equivalent critics' polls in Canada, Portugal and Austria in 2020 and 2021, for both best record and best group (self-reported career detail, not independently re-verified poll-by-poll; see danilo-gallo_notes.md). His earlier working band, Gallo & The Roosters, recorded three albums for El Gallo Rojo Records (Todo Chueco, 2005 [Discogs Appearance-only]; The Exploding Note Theory, featuring guitarist Gary Lucas, 2009, named Musica Jazz's record of the month in December 2011; Everything Is Whatever, 2011).
Gallo co-founded El Gallo Rojo Records, an independent musicians' collective and label based around a circle of northern Italian improvisers, and ran it from 2004 to 2017; its roster included Piero Bittolo Bon, Giorgio Pacorig, Alfonso Santimone and Zeno De Rossi, several of whom he continued to record with afterward. His Discogs-documented credits with pianist Claudio Cojaniz come from that same circle of collaborators: double bass on two of Cojaniz's N.I.O.N. Orchestra-billed sessions, Howl (2010) and Fascinating Journey (2012), both large ensembles that also carried Francesco Bearzatti and Giancarlo Schiaffini. His work with Santimone runs across at least three sessions: Ecce Combo (2010, credited to Alfonso Santimone Laser Pigs), The Crypt: Act I / The Bisiakistan Renegades (2011, with Piero Bittolo Bon and Giorgio Pacorig), and reedist Enzo Favata's Glocal Report project (Live In Hong Kong, 2020).
Beyond jazz, Gallo's own CV lists collaborations in pop, rock and folk with Cristina Donà, Bruno Lauzi, the Sardinian vocal ensemble Tenores di Bitti and Tuvan throat singer Sainkho Namtchylak, and cross-disciplinary performances pairing music with poetry, theatre, literature, dance and painting, including projects with crime novelists Carlo Lucarelli and Massimo Carlotto and visual artist Danijel Zezelj. He has taught electric bass, jazz double bass and ensemble playing at several Italian schools, most recently at the Conservatorio "A. Vivaldi" in Alessandria (2022/23), the Scuola Civica di Musica "Antonia Pozzi" in Corsico (since 2016) and the Scuola Civica "Bill Evans" in Settimo Milanese (2017-2021), and has given seminars and masterclasses on four continents, from the Jakarta Institute of the Arts and the Zimbabwe College of Music to New York University.
Musica Jazz's own Top Jazz critics' referendum named him Italy's best bassist for 2010, and he won the Trofeo Insound as best bassist and double bassist in 2011; from 2015 onward he has placed among the top ten bassists and double bassists in the Jazzit Awards poll.
Gallo's catalog runs on parallel tracks that share a rhythm section rather than a genre. The Bearzatti/Tinissima axis and the Cojaniz N.I.O.N.-adjacent sessions sit inside a composed, large-ensemble Italian free-jazz and post-bop tradition; the El Gallo Rojo-era work with Santimone, Bittolo Bon and Pacorig leans toward free improvisation; and Guano Padano, his most internationally distributed project, works in an instrumental, cinematic idiom that borrows as much from Morricone soundtrack writing and American roots music as from jazz, released on rock-scene labels (Ipecac, home to Mike Patton's projects) rather than jazz imprints. His own Dark Dry Tears output threads a harder-edged, groove-based writing voice through that same instrumentation. Across all of it, his stated aesthetic (per his own artist statement) is a resistance to genre boundaries, and the through-line connecting the projects is less a sound than his own bass chair and, in the Guano Padano and Dark Dry Tears years, his compositions.
