Roberto Cecchetto was born in Milan on April 11, 1965. Discogs' own entry for him reads simply "Italian jazz guitarist," and his career has stayed close to that description for more than three decades, built on a foundation of two intertwined threads: a defining stint inside one of the best-known Italian jazz bands of the 1990s, and a dense, decades-long web of studio and stage collaborations across the Italian scene and beyond.
That defining stint began in 1993, when Cecchetto joined Enrico Rava's electric band, Electric Five, and toured Europe and the wider world with the group through 2001. The association with Rava reaches well past the band itself: Cecchetto is Discogs-credited on guitar across Rava recordings including Noir (1996) and Italian Ballads (1996), Certi Angoli Segreti (1998, Label Bleu) and Ragazzi Selvaggi (1998, Ricordi), the spoken-word project Note Necessarie (2004, Minimum Fax, with writer Stefano Benni), a 2010 compilation of Rava's complete Black Saint and Soul Note recordings, and, more than a decade after Electric Five wound down, the symphonic commission Rava On The Road (2013), recorded with the Orchestra del Teatro Regio di Torino alongside pianist Giovanni Guidi and drummer Zeno De Rossi. In 2007 Cecchetto also appeared alongside Rava as a guest at a Gianluigi Trovesi concert captured on Jazzitaliano Live 2007 (Casa del Jazz).
Alongside the Rava years, Cecchetto built a second identity as one of the Italian scene's most frequently called guitarists, documented across 88 Discogs release-relationship credits running from 1995 to 2022. His most consistent studio partnership has been with double bassist Giovanni Maier, a duo billing on Slow Mood (2003) and Blues Connotation (2007, both Artesuono) that also recurs as a trio with drummer Michele Rabbia on Cecchetto's own Memories (2009) and the quartet date Soft Wind (2011, with Giovanni Guidi added on piano), and again on Red Basics (2016), credited to Tino Tracanna Acrobats alongside Paolino Dalla Porta. Rabbia also appears with Cecchetto on Maria Pia De Vito's Mind The Gap (2009, EmArcy), a session that additionally brings in saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti - a three-way pairing (De Vito, Rabbia, Bearzatti) that recurs with Cecchetto a decade later on Guidi's ECM release Avec Le Temps (2019, with Bearzatti on tenor saxophone, Guidi on piano, bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer João Lobo).
Cecchetto's own leader catalogue runs from the co-billed Rand-o-mania (2001, Artesuono), credited jointly to trombonist Gianluca Petrella and Cecchetto, through Downtown (2007, Auand), his first solo-billed album, Mantra (2010, Parco della Musica Records, featuring Francesco Bearzatti and with liner notes by Paolo Fresu), the trio session Live At Cape Town (2015, Nau Music Company, Roberto Cecchetto Core Trio, with bassist Andrea Lombardini), Are You Standard? (2021, Caligola, with saxophonist Dimitri Grechi Espinoza) and Lunatics (2022, Caligola, billed to drummer Francesco D'Auria's quartet with Cecchetto, pianist Umberto Petrin and saxophonist Tino Tracanna). Petrella also appears with Cecchetto twice more, as a sideman on Paolino Dalla Porta Quintet's Urban Raga (2009, which also features saxophonist Achille Succi) and on the various-artists tribute Progressivamente - Omaggio Al Progressive Rock (2008), a session that further brings together Cecchetto with drummer Roberto Gatto, pianist Danilo Rea and saxophonist Maurizio Giammarco. Gatto and trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso also share a 2009 Jazzitaliano Live recording with Cecchetto, on a separate volume from the same Casa del Jazz concert series that paired him with Stefano Di Battista that same year. Memories (2009) additionally brought Cecchetto together with accordionist and pianist Antonello Salis, billed as a featured guest.
A 2004 big-band date, BargaLee BargaJazz_03 (Philology), pairs Cecchetto with the visiting American altoist Lee Konitz under the direction of conductor Bruno Tommaso, with Dimitri Grechi Espinoza also in the saxophone section; drummer Alessandro Fabbri and pianist Stefano Onorati, both on that date, reunite with Cecchetto seventeen years later on Are You Standard? (2021). Lombardini and Cecchetto also recorded together on Camilla Battaglia's Tomorrow-2more Rows Of Tomorrows (2016, Dodicilune), alongside American altoist David Binney - a connection that corrects a stale note in Lombardini's own profile, which had previously listed Cecchetto only as an unconfirmed, bio-named collaborator. A quartet billed to De Vito, pianist Julian Oliver Mazzariello, bassist Enzo Pietropaoli (not independently profiled on this site) and drummer Alessandro Paternesi recorded Dreamers (2020) with Cecchetto on guitar - the same year Paternesi joined Cecchetto and the Beninese-American guitarist Lionel Loueke for Humanity (2020, Jando Music/Via Veneto Jazz), a two-guitars-and-drums trio Cecchetto's own biography describes as his most recent studio album; a later live version of his older Drops trio with saxophonist Tino Tracanna and producer Bonnot, released as Drops (Live in Bologna), adds Paolo Fresu as a guest, per secondary retailer listings (Qobuz, Last.fm) not yet reflected in Cecchetto's Discogs artist page.
On two occasions Cecchetto also worked as a mixing engineer rather than a performer, on American saxophonist Dave Liebman's Dream Of Nite (2007) and Negative Space (2008), both credited to the Liebman-Tarenzi-Benedettini-Arco quartet.
Cecchetto's own curriculum vitae, published by the Conservatorio "Pietro Mascagni" of Livorno ahead of a masterclass appearance, names a far longer list of collaborators beyond those independently confirmed above, including Palle Danielsson, Richard Galliano, Jean-Louis Matinier, Michel Godard, Stefano Bollani, Stefano Battaglia, Herb Robertson, Tony Scott, Roswell Rudd, Cameron Brown, Bruno Chevillon, Daniel Humair, Kenny Wheeler, Ben Allison, Eivind Aarset, Nasheet Waits, Becca Stevens and Jen Shyu; these are stated here as biographical claims from his own CV rather than individually verified at the Discogs credit level.
Cecchetto received the Top Jazz award from Musica Jazz magazine twice, in 2007 and 2010, and has been described by Italian critics as one of the most interesting and innovative guitarists on the Italian and European jazz scene. He teaches jazz guitar at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory in Milan and at the Siena Jazz summer courses, and has given masterclasses at conservatories including Livorno's "Pietro Mascagni."
Cecchetto's playing moves between acoustic and electric guitar, loops and live electronics, spanning a contemporary-jazz core with genuine forays into free improvisation (heard on Blues Connotation and Soft Wind, both Discogs-tagged Free Jazz) and electronics-inflected fusion (the laptop and loop textures of Downtown, Memories and Mind The Gap). His writing favors small, flexible groups built around a working circle of close, repeat collaborators - Maier, Rabbia, Guidi, Bearzatti, Dalla Porta, Tracanna - rather than a fixed working band, a pattern that has let him move fluidly between his own electric-guitar-led dates, big-band and orchestral settings (Rava's symphonic Rava On The Road), and dedicated duo or trio projects such as the two-guitar Humanity with Lionel Loueke.
Identity confirmed via live Discogs API call: artist ID 295969 ("Roberto Cecchetto"), profile text "Italian jazz guitarist" - the only Discogs artist entity matching a real individual under this name (namevariations on file: Cecchetto, R. Cecchetto, R.Cecchetto, Roberto Cechetto). Two further Discogs entities, "Roberto Cecchetto Downtown3" (8984677) and "Roberto Cecchetto Core Trio" (8203994), are his own named working groups, not separate people, and their releases are folded into the Leader/Co-Leader table below. His personal Discogs artist page logs 88 release-relationship credits spanning 1995 to 2022, listed here with each credit's role and personnel verified directly from each release's extraartists data (or, where noted, from the parent master record).
