Giacomo Papetti is a bassist, composer and arranger from Brescia who plays both double bass and electric bass, and works in the contemporary, composition-minded corner of Italian jazz. He was born on July 20, 1984, into a family of amateur musicians. He began on electric bass at 12 with Charlie Cinelli, then studied classical double bass with Stefano Pratissoli, and in 2012 graduated from the Luca Marenzio Conservatory in Brescia with a second-level jazz degree, summa cum laude. His thesis, "Beyond the standard" (Oltre lo standard), examined improvisation built on contemporary classical materials, and he received the conservatory's Luca Marenzio Prize as best student. His own biography adds a philosophy degree with honors from the University of Padova in 2007 and study or masterclasses with bassists including Piero Leveratto, Paolino Dalla Porta, Ben Allison, Scott Colley, Drew Gress, Giovanni Maier and Furio Di Castri, and with Theo Bleckmann, Ben Monder, Jim Black, Markus Stockhausen and Stefano Battaglia; those are self-reported study credits, not recording credits.

His first record as a leader was Small Choices (Aut Records, 2013), a chamber trio with pianist Emanuele Maniscalco and clarinetist Gabriele Rubino, recorded on July 18, 2012 in Brescia's Salone Pietro Da Cemmo under the patronage of the Marenzio Conservatory. Its thirteen tracks mix original pieces with material from twentieth-century composers, and a review on the Italian site Sodapop praised the way the trio uses the clarinet family and builds its music on timbre, dynamics and notation rather than improvisational routine. The trio played the first Aut Records Festival in Berlin in 2014, and Awake followed in 2020 (Aut Records), recorded at Brescia's Teatro Grande on January 23, 2019 with liner notes by the composer Mauro Montalbetti. On Awake the group is billed as Giacomo Papetti Small Choices, with Maniscalco on piano and synthesizer and Rubino on clarinet and bass clarinet.

Most of his other leader and co-leader work is built around a single partner or a shared name on the cover. Dimidiam (UR Records, 2015) is a duo with tenor saxophonist Massimiliano Milesi in which Papetti plays electric bass. Three Branches (El Gallo Rojo, 2016) is a drummerless trio with bass clarinetist Achille Succi and guitarist Francesco Saiu. Prèludes (Aut Records, 2020) puts him on double bass in a trio of original compositions by guitarist Francesco Baiguera, with Maniscalco on drums. His own quartet The Loom, with trumpeter Fulvio Sigurtà, Succi and drummer Nelide Bandello, made its debut with Chorale (Barly Records, 2024): ten Papetti compositions written between 2008 and 2023 and inspired by pre-tonal, Renaissance and ancient polyphony, with no chordal instrument in the lineup so that the three horns and the rhythm section work as interwoven lines. He also co-leads the free-improvising trio The Grass Tuxedo (two Bandcamp releases, 2014 and 2016) and the quartet on the live A Christmas Paradox (2018), with Milesi, guitarist Paolo Bacchetta and Maniscalco.

As a sideman he has a long run of credits in the Brescia and Bergamo scene and beyond. On Discogs they include Mondongo's Transparent Skin (Megaplomb, 2011), alongside tenor saxophonist Francesco Bigoni, and Mondongo's Gastromantic (2018); Paolo Bacchetta's Egon's (AUAND, 2015); Molester sMiles' Social Music (2016) with Succi; Massimiliano Milesi's Oofth (AUAND, 2019) on Bass VI and electric bass; and a series with pianist Oscar Del Barba: the OX Trio's Ox (Dot Time Records, 2017), the OX Quartet's Giuseppe Verdi Entangled (Da Vinci Jazz, 2020) with Succi, the OX Trio's In Fabula (Nusica.org, 2024) and the OX Quartet's Somewhere Story (Nusica.org, 2025), a reworking of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. He also plays on Alessandro Bianchini's My Space 24 (Birdbox Records, 2025), alongside alto saxophonist Lorenzo Simoni. His discography extends into pop, rock and folk-rock sessions too, including JouJoux d'Antan (Kandinsky Records, 2009), the band Ant Mill (which he co-leads, 2016) and Sleepwalker's Station (2018), but the jazz-tagged records make up 16 of the 21 releases Discogs credits him on.

His biography names collaborations with Rob Mazurek, Giovanni Falzone, Walter Beltrami and Francesco Bearzatti, and appearances at the Toronto Jazz Festival and Budapest Music Center (both 2019), Bergamo Jazz, AutFest in Berlin, Iseo Jazz, Roccella Jonica Jazz, Trentino in Jazz, Veneto Jazz and the Teatro Nazionale dell'Opera in Tirana (2023); those collaborations and dates are self-reported and not itemized as recording credits here. He credits himself with more than 30 recordings as leader and sideman. He teaches pop-rock electric bass at the Conservatorio Luca Marenzio in Brescia, has taught electric jazz bass at the Rovigo conservatory (and earlier at Vibo Valentia and Potenza), and teaches double and electric bass at the Accademia Musicale Zerootto in Cellatica.

Papetti is a composer-bassist who moves between double bass and electric bass depending on the project, and whose leader records treat composition and improvisation as one continuous conversation. Small Choices and Awake pair original writing with fragments taken from twentieth-century concert music, as the Sodapop review and the Awake liner notes both describe, and the Small Choices track list includes a piece in memory of Bela Bartok. Chorale pushes that in a different direction, toward pre-tonal and Renaissance counterpoint, while Prèludes, Three Branches and the Del Barba records put him in a lower-register role inside dense, contrapuntal small groups. His own biography frames his interests as "the implications between composition and improvisation" and the overcoming of closed genres, and his work crosses freely into free improvisation (The Grass Tuxedo) and alternative rock (Ant Mill), so the label "jazz bassist" describes his center of gravity rather than the full range of what he plays.
