Giorgio Pacorig is a pianist, keyboardist and composer based in Staranzano, in the province of Gorizia at the eastern edge of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, not far from the Slovenian border. Born on March 25, 1970, he started on piano at eight and, alongside classical study, turned to jazz and improvised music in 1987. He attended the Siena Jazz summer workshops in 1991, where his teachers were Franco D'Andrea and Enrico Pieranunzi, and a 1993 workshop in Trento led by Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell. He enrolled at the "G. Tartini" conservatory in Trieste in 1992 and took his piano diploma there in 1996 with Massimo Gon. He has also taught piano and harmony at music schools in the Veneto region.

His earliest Discogs credit is Masut (Nota, 1995), a session recorded in October 1994 at Radio Koper's Studio Hendrix in Slovenia and billed to bassist Giovanni Maier, drummer Ermes Ghirardini, flutist Massimo De Mattia and Pacorig, with Gianluigi Trovesi on reeds. The same studio, between December 1994 and February 1995, produced Les Illuminations (Splasc(h), 1997), a two-piano record with Claudio Cojaniz. His first album under his own name was My Mind Is On The Table (Splasc(h), 2003), the Giorgio Pacorig Trio with Maier on bass and Zeno De Rossi on drums; the tracklist includes a piece titled "The Legendary Hasaan."

Three partnerships run through the rest of the catalog. Maier is credited alongside him on 27 Discogs entries, from Masut (1995) to My Second Home II (2026), and the pair made the duo album Incipit (Palomar, 2018) and the trio record Floating Lines (CAM Jazz, 2017) with percussionist Michele Rabbia. Massimo De Mattia appears on 13, beginning with the flute-and-piano duo La Parte (O)scura (2002) and the jazz oratorio Schiele (2003), and continuing through the duo Blue Fire (Klopotec, 2016), the quartet album Desidero Vedere, Sento (Setola di Maiale, 2018) and De Mattia's Suonomadre band (Ethnoshock!, 2018; Riot, 2019; Domicide, 2024), where Pacorig plays Fender Rhodes and a Korg MS-20 synthesizer. Drummer Stefano Giust, who runs the Setola di Maiale label that released much of this material, is credited on 13 releases that also carry Pacorig, among them the duo Così com'è (2024), the trio La Saggezza Degli Elefanti (2026) with clarinetist Marco Colonna and the Mahakaruna Quartet albums Inventum (2017) and Life Practice (2022).

With drummer De Rossi he made Sleep Talking (Artesuono, 2016), a piano-drums duo that includes a reading of the fifth movement of Morton Feldman's Rothko Chapel, and joined the Zeno De Rossi Trio with reedist Francesco Bigoni for Kepos (2013), Elpis (2020, on which all three trio members are credited as producers) and This Is Always (Hora, 2022). Since 2017 he has been the pianist of Pipe Dream, the quintet of trombonist Filippo Vignato, cellist Hank Roberts, vibraphonist Pasquale Mirra and De Rossi, whose Pipe Dream (CAM Jazz, 2018) and Blue Roads (CAM Jazz, 2022) both credit him on piano and Fender Rhodes. Trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini is a third live-recording partner: the duo Dolenti Delitti Dolosi Dalle Dilette Doline (2018), Verso Il Primo Maggio 2017 (2018) and 4G Rate (Klopotec, 2019).

Earlier, in the El Gallo Rojo circle of northern Italian improvisers, he played Fender Rhodes in the El Gallo Rojo band Mickey Finn (Dudek!, 2006, and Gagarin, 2009, with trumpeter Cuong Vu), in Danilo Gallo's Gallo & The Roosters, on Enrico Terragnoli's Orchestra Vertical and on Mauro Ottolini's Sousaphonix records. The 2010 album Zwei Mal Drei - We Hope We Understand! is billed to Pacorig and Gallo, and in 2011 he made the quartet record The Crypt with Gallo, Alfonso Santimone and Piero Bittolo Bon. His cross-border work also includes Slovenia's Klopotec label, the Cerkno jazz festival (Kontrapunk with Koromač, and Age Of Chaos with the Cene Resnik Free Stellar Trio and Rob Mazurek on Clean Feed, both 2019) and the Orkester Brez Meja / Orchestra Senza Confini.

A separate thread is popular music. A festival biography says he began accompanying the singer Elisa in 1999 in an acoustic piano-and-voice project and then joined her touring band; Discogs credits him on piano on her album Asile's World (2000), and the Italian Wikipedia's page on her tours lists him on keyboards, piano, synthesizer and organ. Eight of his 96 Discogs entries are not tagged Jazz: the Elisa releases, three rock records (Breakfast, Rosolina Mar with Trumans Water, and the prog-metal band Garden Wall), a blues-rock live album with U.T. Gandhi & Coleto Blues Syndicate, the Vasi duo album Perfavore Sing (2011) and an experimental electronic compilation credit.

All About Jazz's Neri Pollastri devoted a December 2018 article, "La prolificità di Giorgio Pacorig," to five of his recent releases, among them the Locomotive Duo's Courtyard Stories with clarinetist Clarissa Durizzotto, and reviewed Floating Lines, Sleep Talking and Pipe Dream separately. On his own Bandcamp page he lists about sixty recordings as a leader and sideman; Discogs documents 96 releases and master entries with a credit for him.

Pacorig works in two registers. On acoustic piano he plays free improvisation with a chamber-music sense of pacing: a reviewer of Così com'è called him the more introspective player of his duo with Giust, favoring short bursts and splashes of chords and playing directly on the piano strings at times. All About Jazz's biography of him calls him a Fender Rhodes specialist, and on Fender Rhodes and Korg MS-20 he moves into electric, texture-driven settings (Mickey Finn, Suonomadre, the Orko Trio, Barabba's, the Locomotive Duo), and his ensemble credits show the same reach in both directions, from Pipe Dream's melodic, cello-and-vibraphone chamber jazz to the Slovenian and Friulian improvising orchestras.

The repertoire on his records points to specific ancestors. His debut trio album names Hasaan Ibn Ali, and the label copy for Cristiano Calcagnile's Inversi says Pacorig introduced Calcagnile to Hasaan's music. His duo with De Rossi plays Feldman's Rothko Chapel, Ornette Coleman's "Sleep Talking," Charlie Haden's "Silence" and Paul Motian's "Cosmology" (on the live duo album), his solo album Piano Solo includes two Thelonious Monk pieces, and Darn That Song takes on standards including "Solar." He is not a crossover artist in the market sense: 88 of his 96 Discogs entries carry a Jazz genre tag, and 52 carry the Free Improvisation style tag. His pop and rock sessions, above all the long Elisa association, are a parallel career rather than a rival identity.
