Jazz-funk developed in the late 1960s and through the 1970s as jazz musicians incorporated funk's syncopated electric bass lines, drum grooves, and electric keyboards into extended, largely instrumental jazz compositions. It is distinguished from straight funk by its emphasis on instrumental improvisation and jazz harmony layered over a heavy backbeat groove. Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters, trumpeter Donald Byrd, and the group The Crusaders are among its most closely associated pioneers.
