Jun Fukamachi (深町純, Fukamachi Jun in Japanese order) was a keyboardist, synthesizer player, composer, arranger and producer who worked on both sides of Japanese popular music at once. By day, so to speak, he was one of the busiest studio players and arrangers in Tokyo, on records by folk singers, pop idols and television themes. On his own records he was the Japanese bandleader who took the New York fusion scene seriously enough to record in it, and then to bring it to Tokyo.

He was born in Tokyo on May 21, 1946. His official biography says his father was a painter and high-school art teacher and his mother a piano teacher, that he could pick out songs he had heard on the piano at two, and that serious lessons began at three. He conducted and staged opera while still at high school (Oizumi High School), entered the composition department at Tokyo University of the Arts, and left shortly before graduating because he was already working as a professional. His early stage credits include music director for a Nissay Theatre production of Dostoevsky's The Idiot in 1969 and for the Japanese premiere of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1973.

His first record was not a jazz record. A Portrait of a Young Man (ある若者の肖像, Polydor, November 1971) is a singer-songwriter album on which he sings, plays piano and organ, and writes everything, with Motohiko Hino on drums, Masaoki Terakawa on bass and Shigenori Kamiya on guitar. Its Discogs tags already include Jazz-Rock. Through the early 1970s he was credited on albums by Inoue Yosui, Garo, Off Course, Carmen Maki and OZ and many others, and his official biography records placings at two festivals in 1972 for his own songs.

The jazz-facing part of the career begins in 1975. Introducing Jun Fukamachi (Toshiba, September 1975) was cut in Toshiba's direct-cutting series with Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami on drums, Ray Ohara on bass, Kenji Omura on guitar and Motoya Hamaguchi on percussion, and it includes an early "Perfidy" and a "Bamboo Bong". The same year he formed the 21st Century Band with Omura, Murakami and Ohara, and the group's Rokuyu (六喩) followed. In July 1976 he recorded a solo piano album on a Steinway D, with a companion volume to follow, and in the same year he produced and arranged most of Murakami's own leader debut, Introducing "Ponta" Murakami, for Toshiba.

Spiral Steps (Kitty, 1976) is the first of the records he is remembered for. It was recorded partly at Polydor Studio in Tokyo from July to September 1976 and partly at Media Sound Studio in New York on August 2 to 4, with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, the trombonist Barry Rogers, Lou Marini, Jake H. Concepcion and Anthony Jackson from New York, and Murakami, Kazumi Watanabe and Masayoshi Takanaka from Japan. The sleeve credits him with Rhodes, clavinet, Hammond B-3, Odyssey, Minimoog, Solina and an Oberheim digital sequencer. The Sea of Dirac (Kitty, 1977) went further: Steve Gadd and Howard King on drums, Tony Levin and Anthony Jackson on bass, Eric Gale, Steve Khan and Barry Finnerty on guitars, Ernie Watts on saxophone, and his arrangement of Faure's "Apres un reve" alongside the originals.

On June 3 and 4, 1977 he recorded Triangle Session live at the Seibu Theatre in Tokyo with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker and Barry Rogers as the horn section, and Kenji Omura on guitar, Kenji Takamizu on bass, Martin Willweber on drums and two percussionists behind them. His official discography describes it as the Brecker Brothers' first live visit to Japan. In May 1977 he had also made Together with Jun for Toshiba with the vocalist Martha Miyake, with Takeru Muraoka on saxophone and Kiyoshi Sugimoto on guitar, and he kept a second life as a sideman: keyboards and synthesizer on Hiromasa Suzuki's High-Flying (1976), keyboards on Takanaka's 1977 album, synthesizer and string arrangements on Kazumi Watanabe's Mermaid Boulevard (1978), keyboard arrangements on Sugimoto's L.A. Master (1978), and horn arrangements on Casiopea's first album in 1979.

The high point came in 1978. On the Move (Alfa) was made with a New York band: David Sanborn, the Brecker brothers, Ronnie Cuber, Mike Mainieri, Richard Tee, Eric Gale, Anthony Jackson, Will Lee, Steve Gadd and five vocalists. In September he brought eight New York players to Tokyo, seven of them from that album, as Jun Fukamachi and the New York All Stars and recorded the concerts at Yubin Chokin Hall on September 19 and Korakuen Hall on September 17 and 18. Alfa issued the result on October 30, 1978 as a double LP, and the Discogs entry lists Randy and Michael Brecker, Sanborn, Mainieri, Khan, Tee, Jackson and Gadd alongside him.

In 1980 he formed Keep with the guitarist Akira Wada, the bassist Yasuo Tomikura and the drummer Hideo Yamaki, and released Quark, a record for synthesizers alone. The 1980s then pulled him toward synthesizer music for television, film and animation, including the "Synthesizer Fantasy" albums for Space Battleship Yamato, Queen Emeraldas and Urusei Yatsura. In 1989 he became a professor at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, where he set up what Japanese Wikipedia calls the country's first synthesizer course. He left the post in 1996 and went back to playing, mostly improvised solo piano, including a four-album seasons series from 2000 to 2002, pop piano records of Miyuki Nakajima's songs and others, and a duo with Wada released as Digit Cafe in 2005. In 2006 he opened a salon-style cafe and live house in Tokyo, FJ's, and held a monthly solo concert there.

Jun Fukamachi passed away on November 22, 2010, at his home in Tokyo, at the age of 64. The cause was a pericardial hematoma due to aortic dissection, according to the obituary notice in Natalie dated November 24. He had been preparing a new band, Bokura no Shizen no Boken, with Masaharu Sato of Hikashu and Konta of Barbee Boys; its first album, Garden, went on sale two days after his death. A final recording and a disc of classical piano pieces followed in 2012, and the duo concert with Akira Wada from 2006 was issued in 2022.

His catalogue falls into three strands, and only the first is jazz in the narrow sense. The 1975 to 1980 leader records, from Introducing Jun Fukamachi through Quark, are fusion built on Rhodes, clavinet, Hammond and synthesizer lines over funk drumming, with New York horn players on the records that matter most. Discogs tags most of his leader releases Jazz, with Fusion, Jazz-Funk and Jazz-Rock as styles, and the English Wikipedia and Discogs biographies both call him a jazz-fusion composer and keyboardist.

The second strand is solo piano and synthesizer music, often arrangements of other people's material: the Steinway albums, a one-man Sgt. Pepper, the multitracked Fantastic Suite on The Tale of the Heike, the classical medleys on Fusion Synthesizer, the classical piano disc at the end. The third is the pop and anime work, which was a large share of his output: television themes, pop arrangements, and the "Synthesizer Fantasy" albums. Those records are not jazz and the profile does not pretend they are. What links all three is the instrument: Natalie's obituary calls him a leading figure of Japanese synthesizer playing, and Japanese Wikipedia credits him with a particular tone made with the Yamaha CS-01 breath controller.

Influences are best read from the repertoire rather than from interviews. Debussy ("La Fille aux cheveux de lin"), Faure, Chopin, Beethoven, the Beatles and Hall and Oates's "Sara Smile" all appear on his records beside his own writing. His official biography adds that he admired Wittgenstein and that he came to prefer improvisation in his later years.
