Akira Okazawa (岡沢章) was born on 23 March 1951 in Ginza, Tokyo, and has worked as a professional electric bassist since 1968. He is counted among Japan's leading session bassists: Discogs credits him on more than 500 releases, and the large majority of those are pop, kayokyoku and film or anime soundtrack sessions. The smaller jazz and fusion core of that output is what puts him on a jazz site. It runs through Sadao Watanabe's group, Hiromasa Suzuki's band The Players, Jiro Inagaki's Soul Media, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Naoya Matsuoka and, in recent years, Keiko Lee. German Wikipedia, citing Tom Lord's jazz discography, counts 56 jazz recording sessions for him between 1973 and 2010, and both Wikidata and Japanese Wikipedia describe him as a jazz bassist.
He started on trombone in junior high school. His professional debut came in 1968, at 17, with a group sounds band called M, where he played a borrowed Jazz Bass from the early 1960s. At 19 he left the band and began studying with the guitarist Tsunehide Matsuki, and in 1970 he joined Jiro Inagaki's Soul Media, which is also when his studio work began in earnest. With Soul Media he made roughly one album a year. In 1973 Inagaki produced Okazawa's first album as a leader, ギリシャについて書かれた本 (Columbia JDX-7011, released 25 May 1973), on which he sings as well as plays electric bass. Soul Media and Matsuki back him, Norio Maeda arranged most of the songs and plays organ, and the material mixes soul, jazz-rock and pop, including covers of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)". It was reissued on CD in 2013 with three bonus tracks.
By his own account in an interview for the Chuck Rainey Japan bassist encyclopedia, the early 1970s also took him through an early fusion group with the guitarist Kazumi Watanabe, a place in Masahiko Satoh's trio, and Latin music with Naoya Matsuoka. He says a 1973 invitation to Pit Inn drew that circle together into the Sadao Watanabe group. The record that came out of it is Mbali Africa (CBS/Sony, 1974), recorded live at Yubin Chokin Hall in Tokyo on 20 September 1974, when he was 23. Okazawa is credited on electric bass beside Isao Suzuki on bass, Motohiko Hino on drums, Kazumi Watanabe on guitar, Masahiko Togashi on percussion, Takehiro Honda on piano and electric piano, and Terumasa Hino on trumpet and flugelhorn. Watanabe's management biography adds that Okazawa rejoined the group for concert tours of Africa, Europe and the United States in 1986 and again in 1992 and 1993.
The rest of the 1970s ran through the Tokyo fusion studios. He joined Sugimoto's group in 1976 and is credited on Sugimoto's Our Time (1975) and L.A. Master (1978). He plays on Suzuki's High-Flying (Columbia, August 1976), alongside the drummer Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami, the guitarists Sugimoto and Masayoshi Takanaka, and the keyboardist Jun Fukamachi. In 1978, he recalls, he played the newly opened Roppongi Pit Inn with Matsuki's band and the singer Tatsuro Yamashita, a night that became the double live album It's A Poppin' Time. In 1979 he joined Suzuki's Colgen Band, which became The Players when the drummer changed. Their first record, Galaxy (Openskye, April 1979), set Suzuki's keyboards and arrangements against a rhythm section of Matsuki, Okazawa and the drummer Yuichi Togashiki, and Discogs credits him on seven Players albums, ending with a live record in 1985.
Studio work ran alongside all of it. His Discogs credits include Momoe Yamaguchi, Miyuki Nakajima and Mariya Takeuchi records, Minako Yoshida's Monochrome (1980) and her later albums, and the You & The Explosion Band soundtrack records for Lupin III, which begin with Original Soundtrack From Lupin III in 1978. He has also played behind Yuji Ohno, Kimiko Kasai, Yasuko Agawa, Kimiko Itoh, Anli Sugano, Masaru Imada and Makoto Ozone. In 1996 he was one of seven bassists billed on the P-Vine compilation 低音横綱, and he continued to tour with Takanaka into the 2020s.
After the 1986 tour he also began leading his own groups. Matsuki, the pianist Soichi Noriki and the drummer Yuichi Togashiki joined him in a band called HIP (also written What Is HIP), and the bass maker Quest describes a project called OTONOMA with the guitarist Masaki Matsubara. He is a regular in Keiko Lee's band, and the trio album Live at Jazz Inn Lovely (Sony, 2020) has him with Lee, Noriki and Togashiki. In 2025 he recorded the Akira Okazawa Band live at Shinjuku Pit Inn on 11 August, with Osamu Koike on tenor saxophone, Noriki on piano, Isao Miyoshi on guitar and Togashiki on drums. P.S. I Love You, which he produced, came out on Pit Inn's own label on 24 December 2025 and is dedicated to Matsuki, who passed away in 2017. The set takes in Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Dave Mason songs, Ivan Lins's "Depois dos Temporais" and Watanabe's "Home Meeting." The band played Pit Inn again on 14 August 2026 and has another date there listed for 29 October 2026.
Okazawa plays electric bass, and the instruments he describes in interviews are a 1965 Precision Bass, a 1961 Jazz Bass and a five-string Sadowsky that he had played for ten to twelve years by 2013. The bass maker Quest sells signature models in his name, the MDB-4/A and MDB-5/A Okazawa. He names Chuck Rainey as a formative listen, first hearing him on Quincy Jones albums of 1969 and 1971, and calls Rainey's playing urbane, though he adds that he personally prefers Gordon Edwards's tone. Quest's profile says he admires Anthony Jackson and sets his basses up along the lines of Jackson's and Jaco Pastorius's.
What shows up on the records is a groove player. Pit Inn's own notes for his 2025 album say that his feel is hard to leave out of any account of the club, and that it carries the music beyond the fusion label. His Discogs-tagged jazz work leans toward jazz-funk and fusion, with some Latin jazz and soul jazz, and his 1973 leader album sits between soul, jazz-rock and pop. He should not be read as a jazz specialist in the narrow sense. Most of his working life has been spent on pop sessions, and the jazz-bassist label that Wikidata, Japanese Wikipedia and German Wikipedia give him describes the side of that career that is best documented.
