Han Sang-won (한상원) is a Seoul-born electric guitarist, composer and producer who studied jazz performance at Berklee College of Music, graduated in 1988, and then built his career on funk. He earned the nickname "The Funkmaster" as a student, and in 1999 the Seoul Shinmun called him the foremost Korean guitarist in a funky style. His own albums are Seoul, Soul, Soul of Sang (1993) and Funky Station (1997 or 1998), and he shared a 1998 album with the rock singer Jeon In-kwon. In 1999 his band became GIGS, a six-piece group with the singer Lee Juck of Panic and the keyboardist Chung Won-young. He has taught guitar since 1994, first at Seoul Institute of the Arts and later at Howon University, and Berklee Today reported around 2013 that he had played on about 150 albums.
He was born on November 14, 1960, a date that Korean Wikipedia, Wikidata, MusicBrainz and Melon all give. Berklee Today says that at 21 he was playing instrumental funk and rock around Seoul with American and English musicians. He went to the United States hoping to form a band in New York, and when that failed he visited a friend in Boston and saw Berklee. His mother told him to enrol there or come home. The Seoul Shinmun, writing in 1999, says he left Korea to study in 1983 and majored in jazz performance, while Berklee Today dates his arrival to 1984. He told Berklee Today that he had never seen a Real Book before he got there and did not know how to play jazz, that the faculty member Jerry Cecco let him into his ensemble despite poor ratings, and that Jim Odgren took him into his funk ensembles even though he could not play over changes. He played with the future drummers Tommy Campbell, Aaron Scott and Zachary Alford, and he is listed in Berklee's class of 1988. Korean Wikipedia also records graduate study at the New England Conservatory, and a Melon Magazine column places him in Boston when his first album came out.
He was one of the first generation of Korean Berklee graduates, alongside the pianists Chung Won-young, Kim Kwang-min and Han Chung-wan, all born in 1960. The Seoul Shinmun grouped the four in a 1999 article about Berklee returnees and described all of them as leaders of the Korean jazz scene who also taught. Younger Korean guitarists called the returnees "wonroh", the ancient ones, and the guitarist Steven Ohm told Berklee Today that he went to Berklee because of Han.
His first album, Seoul, Soul, Soul of Sang, came out in 1993 on Dong-A Kihoek. It was recorded in New York with American players, and Berklee Today names the bassist Will Lee and the drummers Bob Moses and Tony Smith among the friends he called on. Melon Magazine says all the instrumentalists apart from the vocalists were foreign, and that the album put funk in front again, a style that had nearly disappeared from Korean music since the band Love and Peace (사랑과 평화). The same column hears the second track, "Mulmangcho" (물망초), as a slow fusion-jazz piece in the manner of Jeff Golub and "Will's Blues" as a thick blues. The cover credits the group Bom Yeoreum Gaeul Gyeoul (봄여름가을겨울, Spring Summer Fall Winter) as featured on "그대의 모습은" and the folk singer Yang Hee-eun on a vocal version of "Mulmangcho". The album was well recorded but did not sell, and Melon Magazine blames the release of Seo Taiji and Boys' second album the same year. Han had said that he was ignorant of conditions in Korean music at the time, according to the Seoul Shinmun.
In 1994 the Seoul Shinmun reported on a newly formed fusion-jazz group called Super Band, built from Berklee returnees and two members of the duo Bom Yeoreum Gaeul Gyeoul. Chung Won-young and Han Chung-wan played piano, Song Hong-seop bass, Kim Jong-jin guitar and Jeon Tae-gwan drums, and Han Sang-won was named as the improvising guitarist. The paper described their music as jazz mixed with pop and blues. The same year he began teaching guitar at Seoul Institute of the Arts, and by April 1999 the Seoul Shinmun listed him as a professor of practical music there and head of the guitar department at Seoul Jazz Academy, with more than 100 album sessions to his name. A 1996 release, Korea Super Session 2, is billed jointly to Han Sang-won, Han Chung-wan and Kim Byung-chan; it has seven tracks, and Bugs files it as fusion jazz. In these years Discogs also credits him with guitar on albums by Kim Hyun-sik, Jo Gyu-chan, Lee Sora, Lee Yoon-jeong and the band Panic, and in 1997 he and Chung Won-young recorded the instrumental "석양" (Sunset) for a tribute album to the rock pioneer Shin Joong-hyun.
Funky Station, his second album, was issued on the label DMR. Bugs dates it to November 1997, and a 1999 Seoul Shinmun article also calls it his 1997 album, while Discogs and Apple Music give 1998. It brought in guest singers and rappers: Shin Hae-chul on "너의 욕심" (Your Greed), Lee Sora on "Kiss" and Lee Hyun-do of the group Deux rapping on "이탈", according to Bugs, with Kim Kwang-min and the drummer Joe Bonadio among the players named by the Seoul Shinmun. Melon Magazine notes that, unlike the first album, it leans on MIDI and synthesizer backing tracks. Bugs classifies it as fusion jazz, and Discogs lists it as funk and soul with blues.
A 1998 release on DMR, Jeon In-kwon and Han Sang-won: First Album (첫번째 앨범), pairs him with the singer who led the rock band Deulgukhwa (들국화). Discogs files it as hard and soft rock; its ten tracks include "그것만이 내 세상" and a long guitar piece titled "Blues". Then, in November 1999, the Seoul Shinmun reported that the Han Sang-won Band, which he and Chung Won-young had led with the keyboardist Kang Ho-jeong, the 17-year-old multi-instrumentalist Jung Jae-il and the 21-year-old drummer Lee Sang-min, was renaming itself GIGS ("to play" in American jazz slang, the paper says) and adding Lee Juck as vocalist. Lee Juck wrote most of the lyrics, and Han contributed three songs reflecting his taste for Shin Joong-hyun's brass rock. The paper judged that the funk was thinner than on his own records and the music more accessible. The song "Lalala" was a popular success, a second album, GIGS 02, followed in 2000, and Korean Wikipedia says the band was active until early 2001, its last credit a tribute album to Deulgukhwa.
In 2001 SBS announced a "G3" concert for June 28 to July 1 at the LG Arts Center in Seoul, in which Han, Ham Chun-ho and a third Korean guitarist took the stage together. SBS described Han as a player known for funky fusion-jazz playing. He was a judge on the first season of the KBS band competition TOP Band in 2011. In August 2016 he played guitar on "SKIP", a single by the singer Crush released through CJ E&M and HIGHGRND, with Steve Pruitt of Snarky Puppy on drums and Choi In-seong on bass, according to the entertainment site Tenasia, which described him then as a Howon University professor and leader of the Han Sang-won Band.
A Melon Magazine column from August 2019 describes seeing him play a sunburst Stratocaster in a small venue and notes that funk and blues records in Korea rarely sell even a hundred copies. His recent public work is with the Han Sang-won Band. On June 29, 2024 and July 4, 2025 it played live club parties tied to the Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival at the Muse LP Bar in Yeonsu, Incheon, with guest vocalists and a repertoire of about twenty songs; the 2025 reports mention covers of Whitney Houston's "Run to You" and Tom Jones's "Delilah".
His base is funk. Berklee Today says he arrived at Berklee playing instrumental funk and rock and earned his nickname there, and the Seoul Shinmun called him the foremost Korean guitarist in a funky style. His records mix funk grooves with blues, soul vocals and slower fusion-jazz pieces, and the Seoul Shinmun heard his three GIGS songs as showing a taste for the brass rock of Shin Joong-hyun. Melon Magazine sets his debut beside the first fusion-jazz albums by Korean musicians of his generation, such as Kim Kwang-min, and compares one slow track to the American guitarist Jeff Golub.
How much of this is jazz is a fair question. In favour of a jazz identity: he majored in jazz performance at Berklee, he headed the guitar department at Seoul Jazz Academy, the Seoul Shinmun placed him in the 1994 fusion-jazz group Super Band, Bugs files both Funky Station and Korea Super Session 2 as fusion jazz, SBS described his playing as funky fusion jazz, and a compilation of jazz fusion, funky pop and bossa tracks from Dong-A Records includes his "Seoul, Soul, Soul". Against it: Discogs and Apple Music class his own albums as rock, funk and soul, or pop, GIGS and the Jeon In-kwon record are rock and pop projects, most of the session credits that can be traced are on pop and rock albums, his main public identity in Korea is funk guitarist, and his recent band plays rock and pop covers at a rock festival. The result is a Berklee-trained funk and fusion guitarist with a real place in the Korean jazz scene whose recordings sit mostly between jazz fusion, funk and rock.
