Jay Barnet Beckenstein was born May 14, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York, to a musical family: his mother was an opera singer, his father a jazz enthusiast. He began playing saxophone at seven and was performing in school jazz and R&B bands throughout his youth. After high school he and keyboardist Jeremy Wall moved together to Buffalo, New York, where Beckenstein studied music at SUNY-Buffalo. The two began headlining their own local gigs, and that partnership evolved into Spyro Gyra, founded in 1974; the band's own story, including its accidentally-misspelled name, is told in full in Spyro Gyra's JazzProfiles.com profile.

Beckenstein led the band through its commercial breakthrough with 1979's Morning Dance and its decades-long run of Grammy-nominated releases, remaining its one constant as the rest of the lineup changed generations multiple times over. He did not release a solo album under his own name until 2000, when he issued the guest-studded Eye Contact, more than twenty-five years into his recording career.

Now in his seventies, Beckenstein remains the anchor of Spyro Gyra's touring lineup, which celebrated a full 50th-anniversary tour in 2024.

Beckenstein's fluid, R&B-inflected saxophone lines, set against electric-keyboard textures, defined Spyro Gyra's entire sound from its inception, one of the clearest and most commercially durable templates of jazz-funk crossover for radio.
