Gianni Oddi was born in Genova on February 5, 1946, into a musical family: his father, Italo Oddi, played the mandolin. He studied at the Conservatorio Niccolò Paganini in Genova and graduated in 1968 in piano (his teacher was Alfredo They) and accordion, but while still a student he began playing saxophone in local jazz groups, and the saxophone soon became his main instrument. He later studied saxophone at the Conservatorio Alfredo Casella in L'Aquila with Alberto Fusco and, according to the dmi.it musicians' dictionary, attended a masterclass with Claude Delangle in 1994.
In 1970 he moved to Rome and joined RCA Italiana as a session musician, playing on records by the label's pop artists, among them Domenico Modugno, Claudio Baglioni, Mia Martini and Lucio Dalla. Discogs credits him on Mia Martini's Oltre La Collina... (1971), Baglioni's Sabato Pomeriggio (1975) and Solo (1977), Dalla's Come È Profondo Il Mare (1977) and Francesco De Gregori's Titanic (1982). In 1972 he joined the big band of the bandleader Enrico Simonetti, alongside the trumpeter Michele Lacerenza, the saxophonist Sal Genovese, the bassist Maurizio Majorana and the Brazilian percussionist Mandrake; a CD drawn from those concerts appeared in 2006 in the Via Asiago 10 series. The same year Discogs credits him for musical assistance on Azimut, the debut of the jazz-rock quintet Perigeo, which features Giovanni Tommaso, Franco D'Andrea, Bruno Biriaco and Claudio Fasoli.
From 1973 he made instrumental albums for RCA in which he rearranged the hits of the day, among them Lucio Battisti's "La Collina Dei Ciliegi" and Paul McCartney's "My Love," and added a few pieces of his own. Discogs lists six numbered albums in that series between 1973 and 1975, alongside Style (1974), a set of eleven pieces on a fashion theme, and Ecstasy In Sax (1975). In a 2023 interview with Psychedelic Baby Magazine he named Cesare De Natale as the producer of his six instrumental albums and described the early material as funk, soul and easy-listening arrangements. He co-composed the score Mondo Di Notte Oggi (1976) with Gianni Dell'Orso, and Italian Wikipedia credits him with the signature tune of the TG2 news broadcast, used from 1983 to 1987. Four Flies Records has since reissued and extended that material: Le Montagne Della Luce (2019, a Romolo Grano score arranged by Oddi), Mondo Di Notte Oggi (2021) and the 12-inch Dreamin' / Geronimo (2023), and Style returned in 2026 on Schema.
In the late 1970s he entered the RAI's Orchestra di Musica Leggera in Rome, winning national competitions in 1977 and 1983 (dmi.it), and he became solo saxophonist for the film composer Ennio Morricone. Discogs lists him on Morricone releases including Voyage Of Terror - The Achille Lauro Affair (1990), The Legend Of 1900 (1998) and Malèna (2000). In the interview he described the Morricone sessions as serious and tense, with marathon 10-hour days and orchestras of 50 to 60 players. dmi.it also lists collaborations with Gianni Ferrio, Bruno Canfora, Nicola Piovani, Franco Piersanti and, among international artists, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald; none of those three is confirmed by a Discogs credit.
The jazz thread runs alongside. In 1978 he played alto in Saxes Machine, the octet of three rhythm players and five saxophones founded by the drummer Bruno Biriaco; its debut Nouami has Franco D'Andrea on piano and Giovanni Tommaso on bass, and Enrico Pieranunzi wrote the liner notes. In the same interview he says he also led the Gianni Oddi Quartet, which played Umbria Jazz and summer festivals in Rome, and dmi.it adds the North Sea Jazz Festival. In 1981 he is credited on reeds on Jelly Roll by RAI Big Band & Soloists, an FMP release with Bruno Tommaso on double bass. dmi.it dates his Ialsax Quartet to 1991 (albums Contrasti and Mosaic) and says he directed the Rome Saxophone Festival from 2006 to 2013. From 1974 to 1992 he taught complementary piano at the Refice Conservatory in Frosinone.
His jazz recordings of the past two decades are section work. He is credited as a saxophonist on the Parco della Musica Jazz Orchestra's Jazzitaliano Live 2007 (Casa del Jazz), as alto saxophonist on Fabrizio Bosso's Ellington album Duke (Verve, 2015), and as alto saxophonist on Franco D'Andrea's Sketches of the 20th century (2023). He founded and directs the IALS Jazz Big Band (dmi.it), and on March 25, 2025 led it in the Aula Magna of Sapienza University of Rome in a concert for the Istituzione Universitaria dei Concerti: a program running from Louis Prima, Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington to Nino Rota and Bruno Nicolai, with the clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi as soloist. He also says he conducted Leonard Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue and Riffs at Sapienza in 2013 and in the 2018-19 season, and that a youth jazz orchestra he directs was founded in October 2022 and made its debut in January 2023.
Oddi is a lyrical alto player whose sound sits between light-music saxophone and jazz. In the interview he names Charlie Parker and Phil Woods as the players who shaped his approach, and says he admires the Modern Jazz Quartet repertoire and the vibraphone of Milt Jackson. His own records, though, are mostly instrumental versions of pop and film themes: Discogs tags most of them Jazz, with styles such as Jazz-Funk, Soul-Jazz, Latin Jazz and Easy Listening, and the arrangements lean on funk and disco rhythm sections and string-and-brass backing rather than improvisation.
His identity is a hybrid. Discogs lists 195 unique entries under his name, and 168 of them are appearance or other credits, 154 of which are pop sessions, film and television music, library compilations or mixed-artist releases. The jazz side rests on Saxes Machine, the RAI big band and Parco della Musica orchestra work, the Umbria Jazz and North Sea appearances, his direction of the Saint Louis Jazz Band and the IALS Jazz Big Band, and the recent sideman dates with Franco D'Andrea and Fabrizio Bosso. The picture that emerges is of a studio and orchestra saxophonist who has also been a steady presence in Rome's jazz circuit and a jazz bandleader.
