Soul jazz developed in the late 1950s and through the 1960s as an offshoot of hard bop that leaned further into blues, gospel, and rhythm-and-blues feeling, frequently centered on the Hammond B3 organ in an organ-guitar-drums trio format. It is marked by simple, catchy, riff-based themes, a heavy backbeat, and bluesy, emotionally direct improvisation aimed at a broad, danceable appeal. Organist Jimmy Smith, saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, and pianist Horace Silver are among its most closely associated pioneers.
