Max Ionata was born in 1972 in Atessa, a small town in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, and spent his childhood there before the family left when he was thirteen. He came to the saxophone through the town band, picking up the instrument around age ten or eleven with no formal conservatory training to follow it: by his own account, he and the other kids in town simply tried to imitate the players they admired on record without knowing where to put their hands. That self-taught path held for years. Ionata worked day jobs, including selling car parts and factory work, while practicing on the side, and didn't commit to music as a full-time living until his mid-to-late twenties.

He turned professional around 2000, a late start by the standards of Italy's jazz scene, and the same year picked up two of his earliest honors: the Massimo Urbani Award for woodwinds and first prize at the Baronissi International Jazz Competition. In 2002 he added the audience award at the Tramplin Jazz d'Avignon international competition in France. Around 2005 he relocated to Rome, then and now the center of his working life, and built the relationships that would define his discography: a long-running partnership with pianist and organist Luca Mannutza, beginning with the 2006 Joe Henderson tribute Lode 4 Joe, and an equally long-running one with trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, whose most direct expression was the co-led Hammond organ trio date Coffee Time (2010, with Mannutza on organ and Lorenzo Tucci on drums).

Ionata's catalogue as a leader runs to more than fifteen albums, most of them duo or trio dates built around a single strong compositional idea. Kind Of Trio (2011, Via Veneto Jazz) paired him with American rhythm players Clarence Penn on drums and Reuben Rogers on bass. Two For Duke (2012) and Two For Stevie (2014), both with pianist Dado Moroni, are dedicated song-by-song readings of Duke Ellington and Stevie Wonder repertoire respectively. Rewind (2016, Via Veneto Jazz) moved him back into a Hammond trio format with organist Alberto Gurrisi and drummer Frits Landesbergen, mixing standards with originals he wrote at the piano. He also appears widely as a credited sideman: on Roberto Gatto's live Remembering Shelly recordings (2010) alongside Mannutza, on the Dino Piana & Franco Piana Septet's Seven (2012) alongside Enrico Rava and Roberto Gatto, and on Silvia Manco's Hip! The Blossom Dearie Songbook (2019), where he and Rava are the album's credited guest names alongside Manco's core trio.

Ionata built a particularly strong following in Japan, where he has toured repeatedly, including a run of dates organized by pianist Yutaka Shiina. His work draws heavily on the tenor tradition running from Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins through John Coltrane, Stan Getz and Hank Mobley, and he has named contemporary player Seamus Blake as a more recent influence on his own playing. He remains active into 2026, touring internationally and continuing to record in both saxophone-led quartet and Hammond organ trio formats.

Ionata plays with a full, vocal tenor tone and a strong swing feel that place him inside the mainstream, hard-bop-descended lineage of Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, with John Coltrane, Stan Getz and Hank Mobley cited as further reference points. That mainstream core runs through two distinct working formats: saxophone-and-rhythm-section dates in the Rollins/Getz tradition (Kind Of Trio, the two Dado Moroni duo albums), and Hammond organ trio records (Coffee Time, Rewind) that lean toward the soul-jazz side of the tenor tradition, the format he shares most often with organist and pianist Luca Mannutza. He has also named the contemporary tenor player Seamus Blake as a current influence, a sign of a still-developing ear inside an otherwise clearly mainstream identity.
