Tal Varon is an Israeli jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator based in Tel Aviv. He holds a BFA in Jazz Performance from The New School in New York, where he studied with saxophonist George Garzone, and has performed in Israel, Europe, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, working across jazz ensembles and classical settings, including appearances with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
Varon's longest-running performing association is with the big band led by trombonist Avi Lebovich, recorded and billed at different points as the Avi Lebovich Orchestra and, from 2018, the Israel Jazz Orchestra. He is Discogs-credited doubling tenor and baritone saxophone across most of the orchestra's 2013 album Volcano, baritone saxophone on the 2015 Shem-Tov Levi collaboration בחברה טובה (Bechevra Tova, "In Good Company"), and alto saxophone on the group's 2018 album Nine Tales One Story, released under the Israel Jazz Orchestra name. On that album he also contributed as a composer and arranger: the track "Coming Home" is credited on the release's own Bandcamp liner notes as "composed & arranged by Tal Varon," with a keyboard solo by Tomer Bar. He also leads his own quintet, performing primarily his original compositions.
Beyond the orchestra, Varon holds several further Discogs-verified sideman ("Appearance") credits: singer-songwriter Tamar Eisenman's Gymnasium (2009, NMC United), on which he appears on the track "Regret"; composer Amos Elkana's Casino Umbro (2012, Ravello Records), a chamber-and-voice album on which he appears on the trilingual song cycle "Arabic Lessons"; and the 2022 various-artists compilation שירים מהתוכנית (Songs From the TV Show, NMC United), tied to the Israeli television program "זהו זה! 2020," on which he appears on one track.
On the teaching side, Varon is on the faculty of the Israel Conservatory of Music in Tel Aviv, where he teaches saxophone, jazz theory and ear training, improvisation, and ensembles, including within the Conservatory's academic jazz partnership program with The New School. He also teaches at the Rimon School of Music, where he founded and teaches "The Art of Practicing and Performing," a course applying a contemplative, mind-body approach to musical practice. That approach draws on a second, non-musical strand of his career: after beginning a personal meditation practice in the Tibetan Buddhist lineage in 2000, he became a certified meditation instructor, and he is also a certified Focusing-method trainer, teaching both disciplines to musicians in Israel and, alongside American instructor Madeline Bruser, at summer workshops in the United States.
Varon's core instrumental identity is as a doubling saxophonist within a large-ensemble jazz setting: across the Avi Lebovich Orchestra/Israel Jazz Orchestra's catalog he has covered the tenor, baritone, and alto chairs on different releases, work grounded in the mainstream postbop lineage he trained in at The New School under George Garzone. Discogs tags the orchestra's Volcano under "Jazz" with the styles "Big Band," "Jazz-Funk," and "Soul-Jazz," placing his primary recorded work inside Israel's big-band and soul-jazz-adjacent orchestral tradition rather than a small-combo straight-ahead setting. His original composition "Coming Home," recorded by the same orchestra on Nine Tales One Story (2018), shows a writing voice extending beyond the sideman chair into arranging for the full ensemble.
A separate, well-documented strand of his professional identity is pedagogical rather than strictly musical: his "contemplative approach" to teaching practice and performance, formalized in his Rimon School course and his certifications as a meditation and Focusing-method instructor, is a distinctive throughline across his faculty work at both the Israel Conservatory and Rimon, and in his US workshop collaborations with Madeline Bruser. This teaching specialty sits outside the jazz genre itself and is documented here for context rather than as a jazz credential.
