Jazz rock developed in the late 1960s alongside jazz fusion, but leaned more heavily on rock's song structures, backbeat, and horn-driven arrangements, often within a band format closer to a rock group than a jazz ensemble. It is distinguished by driving rock rhythms and riff-based horn sections combined with jazz-influenced soloing and harmony. Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago in the United States, and the Canterbury-scene band Soft Machine in Britain, are among its defining early acts.
