Kobi Shefi is a Tel Aviv-area guitarist, bassist, composer and arranger whose four-decade career runs through both of Israeli jazz's main postwar training pipelines: he is a graduate of the first three-year class of the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, the Ramat Hasharon conservatory that trained a generation of Israeli jazz musicians, and went on to a master's degree at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. At Rimon he studied guitar with Gil Dor, later Achinoam ("Noa") Nini's longtime guitarist and musical director. Coming out of that program, Shefi initiated or played in a run of ensembles named on his own artist biography, Nofet, Parpar, Sheshia BeDibur, Neshamot HaTapuz and Trialog, none of which left an independently searchable public record beyond that self-reported account (see notes.md).

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Shefi was part of the circle of younger Tel Aviv improvisers who worked with the South African-born free-jazz clarinetist Harold Rubin, a cohort Rubin himself described as protégés and that also included drummer Assaf Sirkis, saxophonist Albert Beger and pianist Daniel Sarid, among others. That connection ran the length of Rubin's career: Shefi is credited on electric guitar and electric bass on three tracks of Friends (Jazzis Records, 2022), the album Rubin completed shortly before his death in 2020 and that was released two years afterward.

Shefi's main vehicle since the late 1990s has been Common Bond, an Israeli Jazz-Rock-World Fusion ensemble he founded and has led continuously as its principal composer and arranger. Billed on its own releases as blending "ethnic motifs from Africa and the Middle East with Jazzy improvisations, Pop melodies and percussive pulsations," Common Bond has released a run of albums, including the self-titled Common Bond, Rhythm of Life (2006) and Ancient Song of Nature (2013), and has toured a genuinely international jazz-festival circuit: the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and Quebec's 400th-anniversary celebrations in Canada, the Silesian Jazz Festival in Katowice, Poland, Jazzkaar in Tallinn, Estonia, the Kaunas International Jazz Festival in Lithuania, the Ruska Swing Jazz Festival in Finland, Joy of Jazz in Johannesburg, South Africa, plus stops in Serbia, Croatia, Cyprus and the Czech Republic. Shefi received the ACUM Prize (from Israel's society of composers, authors and publishers) for original music composition in the early 2010s; his own materials give both 2013 and 2014 for the award, a discrepancy not resolved here (see notes.md).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shefi formed a new, smaller unit, the Kobi Shefi Free Will Project, an improvising trio pairing his guitar, bass and vocals with drummer Nadav Assaf, a Jazz-trained New School graduate born in 2000, and saxophonist and flutist Eithan Rudman, born in 1992 and a graduate of an outstanding-jazz-players program run jointly with The New School. The trio's billed material, described on Shefi's own site as "improvised jazz/rock/ethnic/classical music," includes a recorded and filmed program called World Talks, presented in both a duo/solo and a full-trio format. Alongside his performing and bandleading work, Shefi composes and produces library music for film, television and theater, and works as a music educator.

Shefi's discography sits at the fusion end of Israeli jazz rather than in a straight-ahead or free-improv lane: Common Bond's own billing, "Jazz-Rock-World Fusion," is accurate to the music, built from Balkan, Middle Eastern and West African motifs layered with jazz improvisation, rock energy and pop songcraft, closer in spirit to the world-fusion side of the Rimon School's output than to the bebop tradition. That surface reads as genuinely cross-genre, but the credentials underneath it are jazz-specific and hard to dismiss: first-class Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music training under a well-known jazz guitarist (Gil Dor), a genuine period as a working sideman in the free-jazz-adjacent Tel Aviv scene built around Harold Rubin, and a touring history built almost entirely around jazz festivals rather than world-music or rock festivals. His own Free Will Project trio, formed with two conservatory-trained jazz musicians half his age, leans further toward improvisation than Common Bond's more arranged, composed material, underlining that the fusion label describes Shefi's stylistic choices, not a lack of jazz grounding.
