Bebop developed in the early-to-mid 1940s in New York, incubated in after-hours jam sessions at clubs like Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, as a small-combo alternative to big-band swing. It is characterized by fast tempos, intricate and rapidly changing chord progressions, asymmetrical melodic phrasing, and virtuosic improvisation intended for listening rather than dancing. Alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, and pianist Thelonious Monk are its defining pioneers.
