Latin jazz is a broad umbrella term for jazz that integrates Latin American rhythmic traditions, encompassing both the Afro-Cuban branch that emerged in 1940s New York and Brazilian-derived styles such as bossa nova and samba-jazz that developed from the late 1950s. It is unified by the layering of Latin percussion and clave- or samba-based rhythmic frameworks with jazz harmony and improvisation. Bandleaders Machito and Tito Puente, along with vibraphonist Cal Tjader, are among its most closely associated pioneering figures.
