Oded Meir is an Israeli jazz trombonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader who has spent more than two decades as one of the busiest horn players on the Tel Aviv jazz scene while anchoring one of Israel's longest-running contemporary jazz groups from inside the band. He trained at the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts' jazz department and continued at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, studying modal harmony and orchestration. Early in his career he played in the Jerusalem Salsa Band and the Tel Aviv Jazz Orchestra and was a member of trombonist-bandleader Avi Lebovich's big band, appearing on trombone, alongside a guest turn from saxophonist David Sanchez, on Lebovich's 2008 album Groove Collage. He also spent time as trombonist in bassist Avishai Cohen's expanded touring project, Avishai Cohen's Eastern Unit, a nine-piece expansion of Cohen's working trio built around Cohen's own vocals, alongside pianist Shai Maestro, flautist Ilan Salem, percussionists Itamar Doari and Rea Bar-Ness, guitarist Eyal Heler, and vocalist Karen Malka; Meir plays trombone throughout Cohen's 2008 album Sensitive Hours, the first Cohen record built entirely around his own singing.

Meir founded, wrote for, and conducted his own jazz big band, Big Band HaNamel (the Port Big Band), handling its orchestration and arrangements, and separately wrote arrangements for the Tel Aviv Jazz Orchestra and the Jerusalem Salsa Band. Alongside this jazz work he has spent years as an in-demand horn player on mainstream Israeli pop and rock records, appearing on albums by Rita and Rami Kleinstein, Eyal Golan, Hemi Rudner, Amir Benayoun, Shalom Hanoch, the Idan Raichel Project, Dudu Tassa, HaGroovatron (on both trombone and trumpet), Dr. Kasper's Rabbit Show, and a live double album by Shlomi Shabat and Yehuda Poliker, session work that runs alongside his standing in the jazz world rather than instead of it.

That standing rests most visibly on his long-running membership in saxophonist Alon Farber's group Hagiga, one of the signature working bands of Israel's contemporary jazz scene. Meir plays trombone on Hagiga's New Directions (2019, on the Berlin label QFTF), which saxophonist Eli Degibri praised as "a deliberate, fascinating and wondrous journey," and on the group's first two releases for the Seattle jazz label Origin Records: Reflecting On Freedom (2021), where Meir is also credited as a co-producer alongside Farber and saxophonist Yehonatan Cohen, and The Magician: Live in Jerusalem (2024), recorded at the Israel Museum during the 2023 Jerusalem Jazz Festival with American trumpeter Dave Douglas as a guest. All About Jazz's Jack Bowers called Reflecting On Freedom "a scrapbook of stylish universal music with a delightful Israeli accent." Beyond performing, Meir has composed and arranged original material for Hagiga, including "Israeli Song" and "20 Years," and wrote "Theme for Michal" for his wife, Michal.

He has also recorded with the Fernando Knopf Latin Jazz Band, appearing on Knopf's self-titled 2006 debut and his 2014 album La Música Es Sentimientos, and on singer-songwriter Ofer Portugaly's 2017 concept album Jazzing It Up With Ofer Portugaly. Meir teaches at a conservatory in Kedumim and at the Beit Dani community conservatory in Tel Aviv's HaTikva neighborhood, has led music-education initiatives in Tel Aviv schools and at Ra'anana's municipal music center, and has served as a judge for jazz competitions.

Meir's trombone voice sits at the crossing point of several Israeli band rooms rather than one settled style: the modal-harmony and orchestration training he took at Rimon, the salsa and big-band vocabulary of his early sideman years (the Jerusalem Salsa Band, Avi Lebovich's orchestra, and later the Fernando Knopf Latin Jazz Band), and the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inflected "Israeli soundtrack" that Alon Farber's Hagiga has built its identity on over more than two decades. As a section player, that range shows up literally in his credits, which move between straight big-band charts, Latin jazz, and mainstream pop horn arranging within the same few years. As a composer for Hagiga, his contributions lean personal rather than abstract: "Theme for Michal," a piece named for his wife, and "Israeli Song" and "20 Years," both written for the band he has anchored since at least 2019.
