Jazz fusion emerged in the late 1960s, catalyzed by Miles Davis's 1969 album Bitches Brew, as musicians combined jazz's improvisational language with rock and funk rhythms and newly available electric instruments such as electric piano, electric bass, and synthesizers. It is marked by amplified instrumentation, extended compositions, and a blending of jazz harmonic complexity with rock's rhythmic power and volume. Miles Davis, and the bands Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, were central to defining the style through the 1970s.
