Apifera is a Tel Aviv jazz-psych quartet built from musicians who were already established individually on the Israeli scene: keyboardist Nitai Hershkovits, drummer Amir Bresler, and bassist Yonatan Albalak (also the guitarist/bassist in trumpeter Avishai Cohen's Big Vicious) had played together for years before producer Rejoicer (Yuval Havkin) began blending his electronic sound with them around 2014, releasing early results under his Time Grove imprint. About three years later, with a substantial body of recordings built up, the four formalized the project as a supergroup, recorded an album, and played a single show; the group never went back to being separate sessions.

The band takes its name from a variety of bee-attracting orchid, matching an intent to build organic-sounding structures and harmonies reflecting natural equilibrium rather than tightly arranged compositions. Their influences run from Israeli folk music to Impressionist composers Ravel and Satie, traditional music from Sudan and Ghana, and Sun Ra's transcendental jazz.

Their debut, Overstand, was released on Stones Throw Records (dated 2020 on Discogs; some press coverage dates it 2021), written and recorded mostly live over three days with minimal overdubbing. Two more albums followed on the label in 2024: Keep the Outside Open and Theodor Marmalade.

Apifera's sound blends acoustic jazz instrumentation with electronic production, built around Rejoicer's beat-oriented sensibility layered onto Hershkovits, Bresler, and Albalak's jazz backgrounds, drawing on Impressionist classical composition, West African traditional music, and spiritual/free jazz.
