Marina Maximilian, who also records and acts as Marina Maximilian Blumin, is one of the best-known singers in Israel, and the records she puts out under her own name are pop records. This profile says that plainly at the top rather than dressing them up. What earns her a place in this catalog is the other half of her working life: she came up as a teenage jazz-club singer in Tel Aviv under the wing of one of the men who introduced jazz to Israel, spent her first years on record as the lead voice of a jazz-fusion ensemble, and has staffed her own bands almost entirely from the Tel Aviv jazz circle that this site covers heavily. Her leader albums are listed in full in discography-full.md for completeness, with the jazz personnel and the jazz-filed releases marked; they are not presented here as jazz albums.

She was born Marina Blumin on December 15, 1987 in Dnipropetrovsk, then in the Soviet Union, and came to Israel with her parents at three. The family settled in Pardes Katz, a neighborhood of Bnei Brak. Her mother Ella was a classical pianist and a conservatory teacher, and taught her daughter piano from early childhood; Marina sang in a choir and later studied at the same conservatory where her mother taught. She sang at the Abu Gosh Festival at ten and at the Tower of David at twelve, and took second place on the Channel 2 talent program Bravo. She went on to the music track at Ironi Alef high school in Tel Aviv. She received a mental health exemption from military service and instead volunteered as a voice and singing teacher for children at the Ben Shemen Youth Village.

The turn toward jazz came through Rick Birman, born Henry Birman in Romania in 1930, an Israeli pianist who was among the first musicians to play jazz publicly in Israel in the 1950s and who spent decades pushing young players and singers forward. Birman took her into the Tel Aviv jazz clubs when she was fourteen or fifteen and introduced her around the scene; she later described it simply, saying he took her to a jazz club every night. Birman had a heart attack at the piano and passed away on December 25, 2003, which places her apprenticeship with him in roughly 2002 and 2003. Out of those club years came her first recorded work: she was the lead vocalist of Common Bond, the nine-piece ethnic jazz-rock ensemble founded in 1998 by guitarist and composer Kobi Shefi, whose lineup also included the saxophonist Alon Farber, a Berklee-trained composer, founding member of the Israeli Jazz Orchestra and leader of the sextet Hagiga, along with oboist and English horn player Yoram Lachish, woodwind player Jonathan Dror, keyboardist Ilan Pustopetski, bassist Nimrod Lachish, drummer Roni Zadik and percussionist Yarom Ittah. Common Bond's album Rhythm of Life, recorded and released privately in Israel in 2006, is filed by Discogs under Jazz with the styles Jazz-Rock and Fusion. She sings lead across all nine tracks and wrote both the music and the lyrics for "Only You." Common Bond's own account of the band lists the Red Sea Jazz Festival in Eilat among its engagements, and the English Wikipedia entry on her states that she performed there; the specific year of her appearance is not confirmed.

In 2007 she auditioned for the fifth season of Kokhav Nolad, Israel's dominant televised singing competition, and reached the August final, where she placed second to Boaz Ma'uda with 27 percent of the public vote. She sang mostly Israeli pop and folk repertoire on the program and reworked it with jazz phrasing, which is what made her the season's critical favorite even as she lost the vote. The runner-up finish came with a Helicon recording contract. A duet with Ma'uda, "Mi Haya Ma'amin," followed in May 2008 and became a hit, and her own single "Sof Sof" arrived that June. Acting ran alongside all of it from the start: she was in Hanoch Levin's Requiem at the Cameri Theatre at fifteen and in The Producers at the same house at eighteen, sang in Schmetterling at the Acre Festival in 2005, where it took first prize, and wrote the music for Rabak at the same festival in 2006. Her television work runs from Barefoot (2011) and The First Family (2011 to 2012) to twelve episodes of Fauda's third season in 2019 and 2020 as Hila Bashan.

Her recording career under her own name did not begin in earnest until 2013, six years after the television win, and when it did she built the band out of the Tel Aviv jazz and improvising scene rather than out of Israeli pop. Step Into My World, released August 12, 2013 on NMC United and Tedy, has Yonatan Albalak on guitar, Gilad Abro on bass, Aviv Cohen on drums and Maya Belsitzman on cello, with Ofer Meiri handling musical production and Tim Young mastering. Eight of its nine songs are in English and one, "Russian Canon," is a Russian folk setting sung with her mother. The Hebrew-language follow-up ארמונות עשן (Armonot Ashan), released April 7, 2016 on the same labels, was arranged and produced by Guy Mentesh, her partner and later husband, and keeps largely the same personnel: Abro on bass and contrabass, Albalak on guitar and synth, Barak Kram and Aviv Cohen splitting the drum chair, Yahel Doron on additional guitars and Maximilian herself on piano on every track. In the same period she guested on both albums by LayerZ, the Albalak, Abro and Aviv Cohen trio that Discogs files under Jazz: she wrote and sang "Goodbye" on Memory Towers (2013) and is the featured voice on "Dreamin'" on Things On Top Of Each Other (June 22, 2015), a record whose other guests included Nitai Hershkovits and the saxophonist Eyal Talmudi.

Since then the work has moved further from jazz and further out of Israel. ביחד (2021) was made with Mentesh, and in 2021 she signed to the US and UK label AntiFragile Music, which issued the title single "Late Bloomer" that December and the album of the same name in 2022, her second in English. In 2022 the Italian cinematic-funk band Calibro 35 brought her in to sing "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" on their soundtrack to the Rai 1 series Blanca, and in 2023 the producer Gordo released "R U 4REAL" featuring her on Ultra Music. A live album of voice and piano, מתוך מופע פסנתר לייב, came out June 26, 2024, and a further Hebrew album, ריק בחלל, followed in 2025. Along the way she has been named Woman of the Year in Music by the radio station Galgalatz, Woman of the Year by Israel's Channel 9 in 2016 for her work in Russian-language culture, and Singer of the Year at the Galei Tzahal annual awards in September 2024, and was nominated for Singer of the Year at the Progy awards in 2022.

Maximilian is a jazz-trained singer working almost entirely outside jazz, and the training is what people hear first. Her ear for rubato, her willingness to sit behind the beat, and the way she rewrites a melody line on a second chorus all come out of the club years with Rick Birman and the fusion book she sang with Common Bond, and they are the reason her Kokhav Nolad readings of Israeli standards sounded unlike anyone else's on that program. She describes herself as a classically trained pianist, composer and jazz vocalist, and she also describes the decision to move away from that vocabulary: talking to Americana Highways in 2021 she said she realized her music "was too narrow" for the people she met on the street and deliberately stripped back the presentation and the writing. Her records since 2016 accordingly favor direct song form and plain emotional statement over harmonic display, and the jazz shows up in the personnel and in the phrasing rather than in the material. There is no evidence of her recording a standards program or an improvising leader date, and none is claimed here.
