Jean-Luc Ponty was born into a family of classical musicians in Avranches, France; his father taught violin, his mother piano. At sixteen he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, graduating two years later with the institution's highest diploma. He began as a bebop violinist in the late 1950s, drawn toward jazz by John Coltrane's music rather than the swing or gypsy-jazz violin traditions that preceded him, and built mounting critical praise across Europe through the late 1960s and early '70s.

His American breakthrough came through Frank Zappa: he appeared on Zappa's Hot Rats in 1969, released Jean-Luc Ponty Experience with the George Duke Trio the same year, and in 1970 issued King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa. Ponty formally joined Zappa's Mothers of Invention, touring and recording with the group across several years, including the studio albums Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe. In 1974 and 1975 he toured and recorded with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, appearing on Apocalypse and Visions of the Emerald Beyond, cementing his role as jazz-rock's defining electric violinist.

Between 1975 and 1995, Ponty released more than a dozen consecutive top-ten albums under his own name, including Upon the Wings of Music (1975), Enigmatic Ocean (1977), The Gift of Time (1987), Storytelling (1989), and The Rite of Strings (1995).

Ponty pioneered the electric violin as a genuine fusion instrument, applying a conservatory-trained classical technique to the improvisational and electronic vocabulary of jazz-rock, a sonic identity distinct from any other instrumentalist of the era.
