Modal jazz emerged in the late 1950s as an alternative to bebop's dense, rapidly moving chord changes, with musicians improvising instead over static or slowly shifting musical modes and scales. It is distinguished by sparser harmonic movement, longer sustained chords, and melodic improvisation that draws on a mode's characteristic intervals rather than outlining chord changes. Miles Davis's 1959 album Kind of Blue, along with the subsequent work of John Coltrane and pianist Bill Evans, established the style.
