Cool jazz emerged in the late 1940s, largely out of Miles Davis's 1949-50 Birth of the Cool sessions and the influence of tenor saxophonist Lester Young's light, understated tone, as a reaction against bebop's speed and intensity. It favors relaxed tempos, softer dynamics, restrained vibrato, and often incorporates classically inflected instrumentation such as French horn or flute within carefully arranged ensembles. Miles Davis, trumpeter Chet Baker, and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan are among its most closely associated figures.
