Gianni Basso on the cover of his 1996 album *Italian Balladeur* (Philology W 156), playing tenor saxophone. Gianni Basso was born in Asti, in Piedmont, on May 24, 1931, and died there on August 17, 2009, at 78. He was the tenor saxophonist of the Basso-Valdambrini Quintet, which Italian sources rank among the most prestigious and long-lived groups in the country's jazz history, and across nearly sixty years of playing he was also a soloist sought out by visiting American players, a radio-orchestra section man, a big-band leader and, late in life, a mentor to a generation that includes Fabrizio Bosso, Francesco Cafiso, Dado Moroni and Flavio Boltro.
His father's work took the family to Belgium in the 1940s. Basso studied clarinet first and then tenor saxophone, and in 1946, at fifteen, he joined the Belgian big band of Raoul Faisant. In Belgium he played with local musicians including guitarist Rene Thomas and Toots Thielemans, and English Wikipedia places him at the 1949 Knokke-le-Zoute festival.
By 1950 he was back in Italy. He worked in radio orchestras, among them Giampiero Boneschi's and, from 1956 to 1958, one directed by Armando Trovajoli, and formed a lasting partnership with trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini. Together they founded the Sestetto Italiano, adding the alto saxophone of Attilio Donadio, and the Basso-Valdambrini Quintet, which stretched to a sextet or an octet as the work required. A local Asti biography says the readers of Musica Jazz voted him Italy's best tenor saxophonist in 1954.
The group's 1959 and 1960 records are the core of that story, and each is confirmed at the Discogs credit level. Walking in the Night (RCA, recorded May 25 and June 1, 1960) has Basso and Valdambrini in front of pianist Renato Sellani, bassist Giorgio Azzolini and drummer Gianni Cazzola. New Sound from Italy (Jolly Hi-Fi, recorded in Milan in December 1959) enlarges the band to an octet with alto saxophonist Attilio Donadio, alto saxophonist Glauco Masetti, Swedish baritone saxophonist Lars Gullin, trombonist Mario Pezzotta and bassist Franco Cerri. Basso Valdambrini Plus Dino Piana (Jolly, 1960) adds valve trombonist Dino Piana, who became the third voice of the front line.
Basso was equally present on the American side of the ledger. He is credited on tenor saxophone on trumpeter Chet Baker's Sextet & Quartet (Music, LPM 2094), recorded in Milan on September 25 and 26 and October 6, 1959, alongside Masetti, Cerri, Sellani and drummer Gene Victory. In 1961 the Quintetto Basso-Valdambrini backed Buddy Collette on Buddy Collette in Italy (Ricordi), with Basso on tenor saxophone and clarinet. He is credited on tenor saxophone on Sarah Vaughan's Let It Live (1984), recorded at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf on June 28-30, 1984 under conductor Lalo Schifrin, with Art Farmer also in the credits. He is also credited on the Yugoslav B.P. Convention Big Band's Blue Sunset (1975), a record on which Farmer and Clark Terry are also credited, and on Jazz A Confronto 18 (1975), billed to the Summit Big Band and Slide Hampton. Italian sources add Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Zoot Sims, Johnny Griffin, and membership in the big bands of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, Maynard Ferguson and Thad Jones; those relationships are reported in biographies and are not itemized in his Discogs credits.
Through the 1960s and 1970s he was a fixture of Milan and Rome studios and stages: soloing on Piero Umiliani's film and library recordings, playing in Gil Cuppini's and Giorgio Azzolini's big bands, and taking the tenor saxophone credit in Giorgio Gaslini's big band on Newport in Milan (1971). He is credited with the tenor solos on Mario Nascimbene's score for La prima notte di quiete (1972), with Maynard Ferguson taking the trumpet solos, and appears in the Discogs credits for Mina's live recording made at La Bussola on September 16, 1972. His own date Jazz A Confronto 3 (Horo, recorded in February 1973 at Titania studio in Rome) pairs him with pianist Franco D'Andrea, bassist Bruno Tommaso and drummer Bruno Biriaco. He spent more than twenty years in the RAI Milan light-music orchestra.
From the early 1980s he led his own groups. Lunet (Splasc(h), 1982) was recorded by the Gianni Basso European Quartet, and Maestro + Maestro = Exciting Duo (1983) is a duo album with pianist Guido Manusardi. In 1983 he founded the AT Big Band, which became the Torino Jazz Orchestra. The band's records include Miss Bo at Big Band (1985) and Summertime (2001). He sat on Asti's city council from 1985 to 1990. Italian Balladeur (Philology, 1996), recorded in Catania on July 14, 1996 with pianist Giovanni Mazzarino, bassist Nello Toscano and drummer Enzo Zirilli, was the first of several ballad-centered albums.
His last decade belongs largely to the Philology label. He recorded duo and quartet albums with Renato Sellani (the A La France series, Two for the Cities, I Wish I Knew), Flashback (recorded February 14, 2001, released 2002) with trumpeter Enrico Rava, pianist Stefano Bollani, bassist Ares Tavolazzi and drummer Massimo Manzi, and a run of quintet records with Fabrizio Bosso and pianist Andrea Pozza: Five Brothers and Line for Lyons (recorded April 5, 2005), Two Generations, Sweet and Lovely, Cool Trane and 'S Wonderful. He taught in Turin, Milan and Asti in his last years, and a 2004 biography by Armando Brignolo, Gianni Basso: una vita con il sax, collects interviews and photographs. He died in Asti on August 17, 2009. His funeral in the collegiate church of San Secondo included a jam session by the Torino Jazz Orchestra, and the orchestra recorded Ow! In Honour of Gianni Basso (TCB, 2011) as a tribute.
Basso is usually placed in the line of Stan Getz: a large, rounded tenor sound, an easy way with medium and slow tempos, and cool-jazz sonorities that his obituarists paired with a robust attack. The British collector who compared him to Tubby Hayes in a post on the Basso-Valdambrini records heard fast, angular bebop phrasing that puts the group closer to bebop and hard bop than the Getz comparison suggests, and Discogs tags Walking in the Night as Hard Bop. A blogger who came to his records through drummer Adam Nussbaum described him as an old-school tenor player in the swing and hard-bop mold and a fine ballad player, comparing his sound to Ben Webster and Don Byas. The ballad reputation is documented by his own catalog: Ballads (1980), Plays Ballads (1998 and 2001), Italian Balladeur (1996) and Stardust (2006) all foreground it. Valdambrini, whose warm, Art Farmer-like trumpet was the front-line partner for decades, shaped the group's sound as much as Basso did.
Identity: Discogs artist 384248, Gianni Basso, tenor saxophonist, born in Asti on May 24, 1931 and died there on August 17, 2009. Every release below is credited to that artist entry. Two sets of credits filed under similar names are not part of this list: the recordings of the Canadian trumpeter and flugelhornist Guido Basso, and songwriting credits under the name Gianni Basso on Italian, Spanish and Czech pop and easy-listening records (including releases by Mina, Bruno Proietti, Luigi Pazzaglini and the children's group Parchis), which are not attributed to the saxophonist.
