Livio Cerveglieri was a saxophonist and flutist who spent his career inside Rome's orchestras and recording studios rather than in front of his own band. Discogs documents 33 credits under his name, running from 1958 to 1976 with reissue compilations of that work extending into the 2010s, and none of them is a leader release: every one is as a section player or soloist inside someone else's ensemble.

His earliest institutional home was the Orchestra Rai under the pianist and composer Armando Trovajoli, one of the broadcast and studio orchestras that trained much of postwar Italian jazz. Discogs bears this out: the same four musicians, Donadio, Marinacci, Piana and Cerveglieri, are all credited on Trovajoli's 1960 big-band album The Beat Generation, a West Coast-charted session that also carries Gianni Basso and Baldo Panfili in its horn section.

From there, Cerveglieri's tenor and alto saxophone turn up across two decades of Rome's film-score and pop-orchestra work: EPs behind the swing singer Nicola Arigliano (Columbia, 1958), the soprano Anna Moffo's Gershwin set (RCA Italiana, 1960), Gianni Ferrio's bossa nova album Lady Bossa Nova In Italy (CAM, 1963), library and beat sessions for the group I Marc 4 (Shopping In Carnaby Street, 1968) and for the guitarist Carlo Pes, and film scores for Piero Piccioni, Berto Pisano and Franco Goldani. Most of these carry a Jazz genre tag on Discogs alongside a Stage & Screen or Pop tag reflecting the soundtrack setting, and on the sessions built as jazz records rather than backing tracks, his playing has been singled out on its own terms.

The clearest case is Piero Umiliani's work. In October 1959, Cerveglieri was one of the Roman studio players Umiliani brought into RCA's Rome studios for the score to Nanni Loy's film comedy Audace Colpo Dei Soliti Ignoti, a session that also brought in the visiting American trumpeter Chet Baker; Discogs credits both men on Four Flies Records' 2016 complete reissue of the score. A decade later, reviewing Umiliani's 1969 score La Legge Dei Gangsters on its CD reissue, London Jazz News picked out Cerveglieri's playing specifically: a "substantial and lovely tenor solo sax," played "with distinction" against massed brass on "Swing Come Sempre," in a style the review compared to Shorty Rogers with a harder Stan Kenton edge, and a "boppish tenor solo" on the title track that "evokes a moan of pleasure from a member of the band." Cerveglieri also plays flute on Umiliani's 1976 score L'Uomo E La Citta, alongside Piana and, on the same tracks, the pianist Enrico Pieranunzi.

His most jazz-forward studio credit outside the Umiliani and Trovajoli circles is the bassist Giovanni Tommaso's 1970 fusion album La Banda Del Cibo Salutare, billed to Tommaso With The Healthy Food Band. Cerveglieri plays tenor saxophone in a band that also carries Franco D'Andrea on piano, Dino Piana on trombone and Cicci Santucci on trumpet, with the American soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy and the Argentine tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri as guests. He also plays tenor saxophone, flute and clarinet on several records led by his Rai-orchestra colleague Gino Marinacci, among them the flute-and-jazz-funk session Atom Flower's (1972) and the television tie-in album Amico Flauto (1972), and shares billing with Chet Baker again on the same named tracks of Marinacci's Italian Movies (1990).

Within that work his playing leans toward the cool, West Coast-influenced big-band writing Umiliani and Trovajoli favored, the Bill Russo and Bill Holman charts of The Beat Generation, the Shorty Rogers-adjacent solo London Jazz News heard on "Swing Come Sempre", with an occasional harder, more boppish edge on faster material such as the title track of La Legge Dei Gangsters. His one outright fusion-era jazz credit, Giovanni Tommaso's La Banda Del Cibo Salutare, puts him in the company of Steve Lacy and Gato Barbieri rather than the soundtrack regulars, suggesting a player whose standing among his peers ran ahead of what his leader-free discography shows on paper.
