Glauco Masetti was born in Milan on April 19, 1922. He began on the violin at ten, first with his father and then at the conservatories of Milan and Turin, and by fourteen he was teaching himself clarinet and alto saxophone. His first professional job was in the radio orchestra of Carlo Zeme, where he stayed until 1945, and he then worked with Tullio Mobiglia, Enzo Ceragioli and Gorni Kramer. Discogs credits him on alto saxophone on a shellac 78 billed to Gil Cuppini's Sestetto Be-Bop (Boogie Drums Woogie / Opus One-Half, La Voce Del Padrone, 1947), the earliest of his credits, and Wikipedia dates his partnership with Gil Cuppini from the late 1940s into the 1960s. The Milan saxophonists he came up beside included Gianni Basso, Eraldo Volonté and the trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini.
Through the early 1950s he was one of the reed players Milan bandleaders called. Discogs lists him as a soloist, with Baldo Panfili and Basso, on a Cetra shellac by the Orchestra Mojetta (1952), and on alto saxophone and clarinet in Bruno Canfora's Cole Porter LP (Presenta Cole Porter, Fonit), with Attilio Donadio, Volonté, Basso, Panfili and Cuppini. In 1955 he formed his first group, a swing sextet that played the winter season at Milan's Arethusa, and in 1956 he joined a Sestetto Jazz Moderno with the trumpeter and vibraphonist Giulio Libano, Volonté, the pianist Renato Angiolini, the bassist Alceo Guatelli and Cuppini. At the third Sanremo Jazz Festival, held on January 18 and 19, 1958, he played in Volonté's quintet. He also recorded for Durium with drummer Pupo De Luca's Modern Jazz Quintet, alongside Volonté on tenor and Fausto Papetti on baritone; on one of the group's EPs Discogs credits him as the writer of "Pepper."
His own records began in 1957 with a run of Fonit releases: a ten-inch LP titled Glauco Masetti (Fonit LP. 227), whose front cover is his portrait, a second ten-inch LP with his Complesso, and a string of 45s and EPs. The 1958 EP with Beppe Termini on bass, Lionello Bionda on drums, Renato Angiolini on piano and Libano on vibraphone puts him on clarinet for "Seven Come Eleven," "Rose Room," "Moonglow" and "I Love You"; the 1959 EP is an alto sextet with Cesare Bergonzi on tenor and Lorenzo Nardini on baritone. For a short time in the late 1950s he also led a quartet with Romano Mussolini on piano, Franco Cerri on bass and Cuppini on drums. The Saint Louis College of Music's jazz archive says that group recorded "There Will Never Be Another You" for RCA in Rome in June 1959, and Discogs lists that title by the Glauco Masetti Quartet on the 1960 RCA Italiana compilation Il Jazz In Italia: 4 Dimensioni.
In the autumn of 1959 the trumpeter Chet Baker recorded in Milan with an Italian rhythm section and horns, and Masetti is the alto saxophonist on Chet Baker in Milan (Jazzland), recorded on September 25 and 26 and October 6, 1959 with Basso on tenor, Renato Sellani on piano, Franco Cerri on bass and Gene Victory on drums, and on Chet Baker with Fifty Italian Strings, recorded on September 28 and 29 and October 5 with Len Mercer's arrangements, Mario Pezzotta on trombone and Papetti on baritone. Discogs also credits him on a Turin broadcast of November 8, 1959, on which Chet Baker, Masetti, Lars Gullin, Romano Mussolini, Cerri and the drummer Jimmy Pratt play "My Funny Valentine," "Bernie's Tune" and "All The Things You Are," and on a Chet Baker session issued as Stella by Starlight that Discogs dates to Rome in 1964. Wikipedia quotes AllMusic's review of the Milan album as saying the Italian saxophone solos are often more fluid than Baker's own trumpet leads. Earlier, on April 4 and 5, 1958, he had played on the Milan session that became Bud Shank's I'll Take Romance.
In the 1960s his jazz work was largely as a section player in big bands. With Cuppini's Concert Jazz Band the Discogs credits reach from the La Scala concert of December 1965 to the live Sof' Stroke recorded at the Universal Club in Marina di Carrara in the summer of 1968. He was in Giorgio Gaslini's big band on Il Fiume Furore and Grido (both 1968, the latter live at Milan's Teatro Lirico) and on Newport In Milan (1971), where he plays soprano saxophone beside Gianni Bedori, Dino Piana, Franco Tonani and Volonté. He is on Giorgio Azzolini's 1971 big-band LP, on Joe Venuti's The Incredible Joe Venuti (recorded in 1971 during Venuti's first Italian tour with the Gil Cuppini Orchestra) and on Romano Mussolini's Fender Rhodes date Mirage (1974), with Emilio Soana on trumpet. Away from jazz he played in pit and studio orchestras: Discogs credits him with Mina's live album from La Bussola, with Augusto Martelli's orchestra behind her, and on Martelli's Formula 5 (1985), where he and Gato Barbieri are both credited as soloists. Italian Wikipedia and a Gerovijazz retrospective add that he appeared with Cuppini and Enrico Intra in Carlo Lizzani's 1964 film La Vita Agra.
In 1970 he was hired as first alto saxophonist and clarinetist of the Rai Orchestra of Modern Rhythms in Milan, where he stayed for more than twenty years until the broadcaster dissolved its orchestras; Gerovijazz says a video shows that orchestra under Gerry Mulligan in 1982, with Masetti the first saxophonist to solo. He remained a jazz musician on the side: he called jazz his vice, re-formed a swing sextet in 1974 and, according to the Saint Louis archive, was a regular at Milan's Jazz Power in the 1970s alongside Cerri, Azzolini, Cuppini, Gaslini and others. On June 14, 1979 an Italian Jazz Ensemble with Cuppini, Basso, Intra and the trumpeter Sergio Fanni recorded a live LP at Milan's Capolinea. In 1996 he played clarinet with Lino Patruno at a concert in San Marino. Failing eyesight had by then nearly ended his playing, and he died suddenly in Milan on May 27, 2001.
Masetti moved from swing clarinet to bebop on alto saxophone, a change Gerovijazz describes as the arc of his early career; his own Fonit EPs of 1958 and 1959 pair the Benny Goodman-era repertoire he played on clarinet ("Seven Come Eleven," "Rose Room") with alto sides that Discogs tags Cool Jazz and Post Bop. Discogs tags the Chet Baker sessions he plays on as Cool Jazz and Bop, and the sextet single with Sellani and Basso (Pellicano, Fonit, 1966) carries his own composition.
He also worked in popular music. He co-wrote "Invoco Te," an entry at the 1960 Sanremo festival (with Gian Carlo Testoni and Tony De Vita, per Wikipedia), which Discogs shows in recordings by Miranda Martino, Tony Renis, Betty Curtis and Mina, among others. Discogs also lists a run of Fonit singles under his Complesso from 1961 to 1963 of pop songs, film themes and cha-cha-chas, and, from 1974 to 1977, Spark LPs and singles of instrumental pop and easy-listening with arrangements by Riccardo Vantellini, among them I Superclassifica (1975) and a twelve-piece set named for the zodiac signs. Of the 178 Discogs releases that carry a credit for him, 130 are tagged Jazz, and the 2021 Spotify compilation Best of collects 38 tracks from his Spark records, so both sides of his career are in circulation.
