Straight-ahead jazz, like mainstream jazz, is a stylistic umbrella term rather than a genre with a defined founding moment or pioneers; it has been used since roughly the 1980s to describe acoustic jazz that follows conventional swing- and bebop-descended vocabulary -- walking bass, swung rhythm, functional harmony, standards repertoire -- without incorporating fusion's electric instrumentation or free jazz's open improvisation. It functions largely as a way of distinguishing traditionalist post-bop playing from more experimental or electric jazz of the same era. Because the term describes an approach adopted across generations of musicians rather than a specific historical school, it resists attribution to particular founding pioneers.
