Yorai Oron is an Israeli bass guitarist and double bassist who has spent close to four decades as one of the country's most in-demand session bassists, while also building a parallel career as a jazz sideman, bandleader, and long-serving jazz educator. He attended the Jerusalem high school affiliated with the Rubin (Robin) Academy of Music, served in Israeli army bands, and in 1989 won a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with distinction; he has also cited private study with the noted jazz improvisation teacher Charlie Banacos (per his own faculty biography at the Rimon School of Music, see notes.md).

Since returning to Israel, Oron has taught for decades in the jazz department of the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, where his own faculty page (fetched directly for this profile) lists his courses as jazz skills for bassists, jazz harmony and light-music harmony, and private lessons in the school's bass performance track. Hebrew Wikipedia and Wikidata also credit him with a faculty role at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (JAMD), where he had earlier studied; JAMD's own current faculty page for him returned a dead link at the time of this build (see notes.md).

In 1998, after years of playing together, Oron co-founded the jazz trio Kadma with pianist Yaron Gottfried and drummer Yaki Levy. Kadma performed on Israeli jazz stages, at the Eilat (Red Sea) Jazz Festival, and in concerts with the Israel Chamber Orchestra; Oron's own biography also credits the group with appearances at Montreux, Nice, Montreal, Ravenna, Aachen, Beijing, and Siena, a self-reported international festival circuit not independently date-verified for this build (see notes.md). A Montreux Jazz Festival Database entry exists for him, corroborating at least a documented connection to that festival specifically.

Independent of the self-reported list, Discogs documents a real cluster of jazz-tagged studio credits. In 2001 Oron played bass throughout the Damon Brown-Jonathan Gee Quartet's Good Cop Bad Cop (33 Records, UK), a session that grew out of British trumpeter Damon Brown's quintet staying on in Israel after the 1999 Red Sea Jazz Festival and was recorded at Gal Col Studios, Tel Aviv; drum duties on that date were split between fellow Israeli drummers Shai Zelman and Yaki Levy. In 2008 he played bass on two more Discogs-verified jazz dates: pianist Ari Erev's trio album About Time, and pianist-conductor Yaron Gottfried's The Baroque Jazz Project, credited by Discogs as genre "Jazz/Classical," alongside Gottfried, drummer Eitan Itzcovich, vocalist Iris Portugaly, and the Israel Chamber and Israel Kibbutz Orchestras. In 2012 he played acoustic bass on guitarist Itamar Erez's Hommage with the Adama Ensemble (Discogs genres "Jazz" and "Folk, World, & Country"), and in 2014 he returned to bass for Gottfried's Pictures At An Exhibition For Jazz Trio And Orchestra, a jazz-trio-and-orchestra reworking of Mussorgsky performed with Beijing's Uno Ensemble.

Alongside this jazz work, the great bulk of Oron's discography is Israeli pop and vocal session work: he was a member of "The Crocodiles," the house band on Gidi Gov's late-night television show Layla Gov (Night Owl) led by Moti Dichne, whose two albums (1995, 1997) drew heavy Israeli radio and television airplay, and he has recorded or performed with Arik Einstein, Rami Kleinstein (including his band "The Council"), Yehudit Ravitz, Noa, Rita, Shem-Tov Levy, and, per his Rimon biography, Shlomo Artzi, along with the Israel Philharmonic and Jerusalem Symphony orchestras. That biography also states he has performed with visiting jazz artists Claudio Roditi, Al Di Meola, and Didier Lockwood; this is carried here as his own institution's self-reported biography rather than independently discography-verified (see notes.md).

Oron's Discogs-verified jazz work spans two distinct idioms. On the Damon Brown-Jonathan Gee Quartet's Good Cop Bad Cop he anchors a straight-ahead, mainstream small-group date in the hard-bop lineage. On his repeated collaborations with Yaron Gottfried -- The Baroque Jazz Project and Pictures At An Exhibition For Jazz Trio And Orchestra -- he plays the bass chair in a jazz trio set against a full orchestra, a "third stream" format built specifically to pair composed classical material with improvisation. His four decades teaching jazz harmony and bass fundamentals at the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music sit squarely inside that same mainstream/straight-ahead tradition, even as his far larger body of session work has been in Israeli pop and vocal music rather than jazz.
