Toshio Osumi, born June 23, 1944, in Awara, Fukui, is best known for a single, remarkable tenure: he has been the drummer of the Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio continuously since 1974. That fifty-two-year span is directly traceable through the group's own recorded history, from Live at the Misty (1974) through a historical 1976 concert tape, Live at Basie, only released in 2026 — one of the longest continuous working relationships documented anywhere in Japanese jazz.

His own name appears less often on album covers than his sideman volume would suggest — most of his more than fifty recorded credits are as the Yamamoto Trio's drummer rather than as a leader — but the density of that single relationship, running essentially uninterrupted across five decades and multiple labels (from the trio's earliest 1970s sides through its Venus Records and evosound-era output in the 2020s), makes him one of the more quietly consequential rhythm-section players in the genre's history.

He built a parallel, smaller career as a leader, running the Toshio Osumi Trio through a run of albums on the M&I Jazz label between 2002 (Jubilation) and 2009 (Walk Don't Run), and later self-titled dates including Carry On (2014) and Caravan (2019). He remains an active recording musician, both with the Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio and under his own name.

Osumi's playing is defined by longevity and consistency rather than a distinctive individual signature — the qualities that make a rhythm section player indispensable to a working trio across five decades of shifting jazz fashions.
