Patrizia "Patty" Lomuscio was born in 1975 in Andria, in Italy's Puglia region, and won her first singing competition in her hometown at the age of eight. A scholarship pointed her toward classical training rather than pop music: she studied cello, first locally and then at the Conservatorio "N. Piccinni" in Bari under Nicola Fiorino, eventually earning a cello diploma there in 2016. Jazz came alongside the classical training. At the same Bari conservatory she studied under saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano and Davide Santorsola, earning a first-level Jazz Music degree in 2008 and a jazz biennium diploma in 2011, both with full marks and honors.
Competitions and seminars built her reputation through the 2000s. She won the first Andria Jazz competition for emerging talent in the summer of 2003. In 2004 she attended the Nuoro Jazz seminar under the artistic direction of Paolo Fresu, studying there with jazz singer Maria Pia De Vito and winning a scholarship; the following year she published a thesis on Charlie Parker and the ballad repertoire in the seminar's own journal. In January 2005 she won the "Premio al Femminile" as best female artist at the Chicco Bettinardi Jazz Competition in Piacenza. In November 2011 she went to New York for further study with pianist Jon Davis, a relationship that would shape her recording career a few years later.
Her first recording, released in 2007, was a group side project rather than a solo leader date: Jazz Moments...in a Classic Mood (Fo(u)r Edition), a set of swing and Dixieland-flavored standards credited jointly to trumpeter Mino Lacirignola, clarinetist Pino Pichierri, banjoist Renzo Bagorda, bassist/trombonist Muzio Petrella and Lomuscio on lead vocals. Her first album under her own name did not arrive until 2016: Further to Fly, a set of Simon & Garfunkel songs reworked in jazz arrangements, recorded in New York in September 2015 with Jon Davis on piano, Gianluca Renzi on bass and arrangements, and drummer Vince Ector, and released on the Rome-based Alfa Music/AlfaProjects label. The album was a finalist for Italy's Targhe Tenco songwriting prize in 2016.
Her most widely noticed record came in 2022. Star Crossed Lovers was recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with pianist Kenny Barron, alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Joe Farnsworth, and released internationally by the Dutch label Challenge Records. Lomuscio has said that she and Barron chose the Billy Strayhorn/Duke Ellington title track together out of a shared admiration for Strayhorn, and that the session marked the first time in Barron's long career that he recorded a full studio album fronting a singer. The program otherwise draws on repertoire including Gershwin and Mal Waldron's "Left Alone." She has since continued working in the same vein, releasing a tribute to Caterina Valente, I Sing Caterina, recorded with Italian jazz musicians, and a further album, My Foolish Heart (2025); neither is yet catalogued on Discogs, so they are noted here rather than itemized in the verified discography.
Teaching has run alongside performing for Lomuscio's entire adult career. She has taught jazz singing since 2000, holding positions at conservatories in Lecce, at the "Benedetto Marcello" Conservatory in Venice and at the "N. Piccinni" Conservatory in Bari, before being appointed a tenured professor of jazz singing at the Conservatorio di Musica "E.R. Duni" in Matera in December 2014, a post she still holds. She has also published two books, on singer Abbey Lincoln and on the fusion of jazz and European classical music. She performs internationally, with dates in Taiwan, Morocco, Spain and Austria documented alongside her regular concert work across Italy.
Lomuscio's recorded output moves across three distinct registers rather than settling into one. Her earliest recording, Jazz Moments...in a Classic Mood (2007), sits in a trad/Dixieland-adjacent swing idiom, built around banjo, clarinet and trumpet on repertoire like "Muskrat Ramble" and "Indiana." Further to Fly (2016) is a jazz-pop crossover project, reworking Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's folk-pop songbook for a piano trio behind her voice. Star Crossed Lovers (2022) is straight-ahead mainstream jazz singing in the classic ballads-and-standards mold, built around a first-call New York rhythm section she has named as a direct influence: she has spoken of studying Kenny Barron's playing closely and of regarding the Van Gelder Studio session, in a room where John Coltrane and Clifford Brown once recorded, as a career milestone. Her academic training runs underneath all three: a classically trained cellist as well as a conservatory-certified jazz vocalist, she has taught jazz singing continuously since 2000 and has written published research on Charlie Parker's ballad style and on Abbey Lincoln.
