Miku Yonezawa (米澤美玖) is a tenor saxophonist from Asahikawa, in the north of Hokkaido, where she was born on May 4, 1992. She took up the tenor at eight in a school wind band and met jazz at eleven, when she joined a big band. By 2014 she was performing in Tokyo, playing a World Music Internet Broadcasting Association event in Yoyogi Park, an appearance she repeated every year through 2018, and demonstrating equipment at the Musical Instrument Fair.
Her first album, Amusement, came out on July 23, 2016, on the Tokyo label Trilogic, which would release most of her records for the next decade. It is a nine-track fusion set, and its follow-up, Landscape (2017), keeps to that lane. In 2017 the magazine Jazz Japan included her in its feature on sixty emerging artists of the 2010s. Another World (May 2018) is an album of all original material, with Jun Abe and Makoto Aoyagi on piano, and the label followed it that October with Gift From Amusement, a best-of that re-recorded seven earlier tracks and added three new ones.
Two albums in 2019 changed her standing. Dawning Blue, released on January 11, is a program of standards and ballads, seven tracks running between six and nine minutes: "My Foolish Heart," "Bewitched," "When I Fall in Love," and Paul and Linda McCartney's "My Love" among them, with Hiroshi Okamoto and Makoto Aoyagi on piano, Koichi Osamu on bass and Takeshi Hatae and Senri Kawaguchi on drums. On April 24 came Exotic Gravity, her debut on a major label, King Records, with nine tracks including her own "Tenor Hunter" and "Wyvern" alongside Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Flight of the Bumble Bee" and Piazzolla's "Libertango," arranged by Etsuji Ogawa. The keyboards were shared between Jun Abe, Keiji Matsumoto and Makoto Aoyagi, and Hiroyuki Noritake was among the drummers. In January 2020 the two records together won Album of the Year in the New Star category of the Jazz Japan Award 2019. Her Japanese Wikipedia entry also reports that Dawning Blue spent months at the top of Amazon Japan's jazz sales ranking, and that in spring 2019 she joined the guitarist TAKURO of GLAY on his solo tour for the third time.
The next stretch was collaborative. Project M, a quartet built around her saxophone with Jun Tomoda on piano, bassist Ryo Kawasaki (カワサキ亮, a different musician from the guitarist of the same name) and Daiki Takeuchi on drums, issued The Masterpieces and The Masterpieces II in 2020, covering rock, soul and Japanese pop songs, and The Masterpieces III "Anime Jazz" in 2021, which turns themes from Dragon Ball Z, Mazinger Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Howl's Moving Castle, plus Disney's "A Whole New World," into jazz. Back under her own name she cut Blue Shadow (February 2022), a ballad album that includes "Skylark," "Alfie," "I Remember Clifford" and a Chopin prelude, and Delight (April 2023), an album of original material with Etsuji Ogawa producing and arranging. She is also the tenor saxophonist of The Jazz Avengers, an eight-member band with Ami Nakazono on soprano and Jun Abe as sound producer, which released a self-titled album in 2023, a concert Blu-ray, Live 2023 Unite (2024), and 8 Steps (2024). She composed and arranged "Raise Your Flag" for the first album and "Chase Myself" for the third.
Since 2025 she has turned toward the standards. Ballads for the Vinyl (January 2025, an analog LP on Kamnabi Records with her own liner notes) collected six ballads, and Swingin' Me (May 2025) and Swingin' You (August 2025, billed as her tenth album) are standards sessions with an acoustic piano trio and Hiroshi Okamoto arranging, taking in "Joy Spring," "Naima," "Au Privave," "Stella by Starlight" and "Speak Low." Swingin' Us, an eight-track LP drawn from the two, followed on May 4, 2026, her 34th birthday. She also appears in the saxophone section of the trumpeter Eric Miyashiro's big-band LP Blue Horizon (September 2025), and in February 2025 she opened an online salon, Studio Miku.
The tenor is her main instrument, and the Zoom company describes her playing as moving between a tasteful side and an aggressive one. That range is audible across the catalog. The Trilogic and King records of 2016 to 2019 and Delight in 2023 are fusion records, electric and rhythmic, with material by her and Etsuji Ogawa and Ogawa's arrangements built on synthesizers, programming and, on Another World, an electronic wind instrument alongside the saxophones. The ballad records (Dawning Blue, Blue Shadow, Ballads for the Vinyl) and the Swingin' series are straight-ahead tenor playing with an acoustic piano trio, built on the American songbook and on jazz repertoire such as Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring," John Coltrane's "Naima" and Charlie Haden's "Here's Looking at You."
Her Japanese Wikipedia entry describes the playing as spanning jazz and fusion with versatility across soul, funk and pop-oriented session work, and the discography bears that out in the anime and pop-song records with Project M and in credits such as a tenor part on a 2025 progressive-rock album by Shusei's Project. She has also designed saxophone effect patches (an auto-wah, an octave-down blend, a long-delay ballad setting) for Zoom's A1 FOUR multi-effects unit, a sign of how much of her sound is shaped by pedals as well as breath.
Japanese tenor saxophonist (also alto and soprano). Born May 4, 1992, Asahikawa, Hokkaido. Discogs artist 12144274.
