Gianni Cazzola was born in San Giovanni in Persiceto, in the province of Bologna, on May 9, 1938, and died in Busto Arsizio, near Varese, on July 18, 2026, at 88. Italian Wikipedia calls him one of the most prolific and appreciated instrumentalists of the Italian jazz scene, and the Treccani encyclopedia lists him among the high-level musicians the country's jazz has produced. His career ran for almost seventy years, from a 1957 debut with guitarist Franco Cerri to a 2026 album, and it ended on a bandstand: he fell ill while playing at the Gemia Swing Club in Busto Arsizio on the evening of July 18 and died in hospital soon afterward.

According to an obituary in the magazine Buscadero, he came to the drums as a child of about nine, when his brother Lino played him records by Gene Krupa and Cozy Cole. He was largely self-taught and made Art Blakey his main reference, and he later remembered taking private ride-cymbal lessons in a Milan hotel from Duke Ellington's drummer Sam Woodyard in February 1963. He played his first jam sessions in 1956 and joined Cerri's group in 1957, at 19. The next year the saxophonist Gianni Basso and trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini called him into the Basso-Valdambrini quintet, with pianist Renato Sellani and bassist Giorgio Azzolini. Discogs credits him on drums on the quintet's records from 1959, including Walking in the Night (RCA, recorded May 25 and June 1, 1960) and Basso Valdambrini Plus Dino Piana (1960) with valve trombonist Dino Piana. His early Milan sessions also include Enrico Intra's quintet on Welcome Mr. Swing (Liberty, 1958) with guitarist Bruno De Filippi, and Cerri's own records, among them Jazzin' with Cerri (1958) and Blues for Franco (1960). Italian press accounts add that in 1958 he played with Billie Holiday at Milan's Taverna Messicana, which would make him the only Italian drummer documented alongside her; that claim comes from biographies and is not itemized in his Discogs credits.

He moved to Busto Arsizio in 1964 and stayed. Discogs credits him with Chet Baker on a session recorded in Rome in 1964 and issued in 1989 as Stella by Starlight (West Wind), with Cerri on bass, Glauco Masetti on alto saxophone and René Thomas on guitar. Buscadero adds that in the 1960s he played rhythm and blues and soul with saxophonist Gato Barbieri at Milan's Charlie Max club; a 1966 Discogs credit on Augusto Righetti's Al Charly Max beat record places him in that room, though it does not itemize the Barbieri connection. Italian Wikipedia and his Discogs profile name Gerry Mulligan, Dexter Gordon, Tommy Flanagan, Sarah Vaughan, Clark Terry, Helen Merrill and others among the visiting players he worked with; those relationships are reported in biographies and are not itemized in his Discogs credits. The 1969 Abstraction (Car Juke Box), recorded in Milan on November 28, 1969, is the earliest record under his own name on Discogs: the Gianni Cazzola Trio with pianist Oscar Rocchi and bassist Cornelio Dattoli, ending on a piece titled "Remember Coltrane."

The 1970s and early 1980s bring a run of records with the avant-garde end of Milan jazz. He is the drummer on Giorgio Gaslini's big-band records Il Fiume Furore and Grido (both 1968, with Steve Lacy on soprano saxophone on Grido), and on the Gaslini small-group records Free Actions, Kleinhoff Hotel, La Salute Non Si Vende and Graffiti (1977-78), which also credit reedman Gianluigi Trovesi and bassist Paolo Damiani. Live at the Public Theater in New York was recorded there on April 28, 1980. He is on Trovesi's Baghèt (1978) and Cinque piccole storie (1981), on Franco Cerri's Querce Platani & Cerri (1975) and on Oscar Rocchi's Alchemy in Jazz (1979) with bassist Furio Di Castri. Buscadero says the Gaslini years opened him to the free drummers, among them Rashied Ali and Andrew Cyrille. Alongside the jazz he did studio pop work: Italian Wikipedia says he played on Mina's "Grande, grande, grande" in the orchestra of arranger Pino Presti, and Discogs credits him on records by Augusto Martelli, Gino Paoli and Fred Bongusto; in that catalog these are a small share beside the jazz dates.

From the mid-1980s the credits are almost all jazz, most of them on the Italian labels Splasc(h), Red Record and Philology. He recorded with pianist Franco D'Andrea and bassist Attilio Zanchi on Live (recorded in Montpellier, November 1985), My Shuffle (1987) and Flavours (1992); with pianist Mal Waldron on singer Femi Bellomo's Since You've Gone (Dire, recorded March 1985); and on Sharp Blues (Splasc(h), recorded in Verona in April 1986), which Discogs bills as the Matt Jazz Quintet featuring Gianni Cazzola, with pianist Luca Flores. In 1988 he formed the Italian Repertory Quartet with bassist Piero Leveratto, pianist Marcello Tonolo and tenor saxophonist Jacopo Jacopetti, and the quartet's album Italian Repertory (Gala) followed the same year. On December 16, 1988 he played a live date with alto saxophonist Massimo Urbani at the Belzebù restaurant in his home town, released in 2004 as Live at Belzebù (Philology). In October 1990 he cut So That (Splasc(h)) in Milan with pianist Guido Manusardi and bassist Eddie Gomez, and in 1992 he began a long association with pianist Dado Moroni, starting with the trio album What's New? with bassist Rosario Bonaccorso.

Through the 1990s and 2000s he was the regular drummer of the E.S.P. Trio with Zanchi and pianist Roberto Cipelli, which backed singer Sheila Jordan on Sheila's Back in Town (recorded on Italian and Slovenian dates in March 1998) and, with trumpeter Paolo Fresu, on Straight Ahead (recorded in February 2004). He recorded Ornithology - Phil Salutes Bird with altoist Phil Woods, Franco D'Andrea and Zanchi (Philology, recorded June 7, 1994); backed Tiziana Ghiglioni on Spellbound (1996), Tenco in Jazz and My Essential Duke Ellington (both 1998), the last with Lee Konitz on two tracks; and played on Red Door Number 11 (2003) with pianist George Cables. Under his own name came Blakey Sounds (Splasc(h), 2003), and the CD Una vita in Swing (2006) that came with his autobiography of the same name from Tagete Edizioni. He shared credits with younger players on Wail (2008) with pianist Rossano Sportiello, Blue Shuffle (2009) with organist Alberto Marsico, Ballads (2011) and Fatsology, a 2017 Fats Waller tribute for Abeat with guitarist Sandro Gibellini.

The late records lean on the mentor role that Buscadero describes: like Blakey, he built bands around young players. Three Generations (All Right Riserva, recorded in Verona and released April 11, 2020) is a bebop session by a sextet aged 17 to 81, with Sophia Tomelleri on alto and tenor saxophone, Cesare Mecca on trumpet, Didier Yon on trombone, Alberto Bonacasa on Fender Rhodes and Alex Orciari on bass. In July 2017 he led a Fats Waller tribute sextet at Umbria Jazz, and he celebrated his 85th and 88th birthdays on stage in Busto Arsizio, the second at the Gemia Swing Club on May 9, 2026. In October 2023 his friend and fellow drummer Tullio De Piscopo organized a "Gianni Cazzola Night" for him at the Teatro Sociale in Busto Arsizio, and De Piscopo's tribute after his death read, in translation, "Your rhythm, your smile and your humanity will remain forever in the hearts of all musicians." His most recent album, Swinging! (Azzurra Music, 2026), lists trumpeter Cesare Mecca, saxophonist Bruno Marini and bassist Alex Orciari on its Spotify tracks. He was an honorary citizen of Montopoli in Val d'Arno. The funeral was held on July 21 at the Church of Sant'Edoardo in Busto Arsizio.

Cazzola's stated model was Art Blakey, and his 2003 album Blakey Sounds and the Blakey Legacy ensemble named in Italian press accounts make the debt explicit; the notes to Three Generations describe him as continuing Blakey's work of bringing young players forward. Buscadero's obituary names Shelly Manne, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach and Philly Joe Jones as drummers he studied on record, then Roy Haynes and Elvin Jones as later influences, and the ECM-associated Jon Christensen. The Woodyard lesson is credited with giving him the ride-cymbal swing feel that became his trademark. Discogs tags Three Generations as bop and swing and Sharp Blues as post-bop, while the 1977-80 Gaslini records carry free-jazz and contemporary-jazz tags, a range that matches the obituary's account of his openness to free drumming. Buscadero says he considered the drummer Gegè Munari his equal, each excelling in a different setting: Cazzola in small groups, Munari in big bands. American colleagues named by Buscadero as admirers include Peter Erskine, Steve Gadd and Joe Farnsworth.
