Sandro Gibellini (born Alessandro Gibellini in 1957 in Pralboino, in the Brescia province of Lombardy) is an Italian jazz guitarist and composer. He taught himself guitar as a boy, with a father who played mandolin and kept a guitar in the house, and came to the instrument through rock and blues records brought home by his older brothers before turning to jazz. In 1979 he enrolled at the Centro Studi Musicali Nino Donzelli in Cremona and, the same year, joined drummer Gianni Cazzola's quintet, also beginning a long association with saxophonist Pietro Tonolo. From 1980 he worked with touring American musicians passing through Italy, including Lee Konitz, Mel Lewis, Al Grey, Sal Nistico, Dave Schnitter, Steve Grossman, Lew Tabackin, Jimmy Owens and Gerry Mulligan, and in 1984 he won a chair in the RAI Big Band in Milan, where he played through 1991.

Gibellini is the guitarist on Pietro Tonolo's Quartet Quintet Sextet (1984), alongside bassist Furio Di Castri, drummer Roberto Gatto, pianist Rita Marcotulli and trumpeter Franco Piana. From 1988 to 1999 he was the guitarist in the quintet Reunion, documented on Flight Charts And Plans (1989) with Danilo Rea on keyboards, Roberto Gatto on drums and the American saxophonist Larry Schneider as a later guest. He recorded his leader debut, Felix (1990), with pianist Riccardo Zegna, bassist Piero Leveratto and tenor saxophonist Mauro Negri. In 1993 he joined Lee Konitz for the large-ensemble recording Lee Konitz E Il Suono Improvviso A Venezia, alongside pianist Paolo Birro, trombonist Roberto Rossi, drummer Davide Ragazzoni and saxophonist Marco Castelli, and the following year he appeared on Sweet Sixteen (1994), the Keptorchestra's session with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, alongside Mauro Negri, Pietro Tonolo, Roberto Rossi, Piero Odorici, Bruno Marini, Marcello Tonolo, Giampaolo Casati and Marco Tamburini.

He formed his own trio in 1992 with Mauro Negri and Paolo Birro, and released La Banda Disegnata (1996) with a septet. In 1999 he, bassist Ares Tavolazzi and drummer Mauro Beggio formed the working trio Gibellini Tavolazzi Beggio, recording You, And The Night And The Music (1999), Let's Face The Music And Dance (2001) and Put On A Happy Face (2010). He is also the guitarist on the Guido Manusardi Quintet's Lost In Space (2003), led by pianist Guido Manusardi with bassist Lucio Terzano and Mauro Beggio on drums. His 2006 leader album Trufo, dedicated to filmmaker Francois Truffaut, was followed the same year by Palavra Prima - Il Mondo di Chico Buarque, a Chico Buarque songbook co-led with singer Barbara Casini and guitarist Beppe Fornaroli; Gibellini and Casini also recorded together on her Anos Dourados (2003), Uma Voz Para Caetano (2003), Uragano Elis (2004) and Barato Total (2011), and Gibellini separately plays on Casini's 2002 duo session with Lee Konitz, Outra Vez.

In 2001 he recorded Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins - An Homage From Italy with the Emanuele Cisi Quartet, led by saxophonist Emanuele Cisi with bassist Dario Deidda and drummer Luigi Bonafede, and in 2006 he appears on alto saxophonist Francesco Cafiso's Jazzitaliano Live 2006. In 2007 he recorded the duo album Two Of Us... with saxophonist Alan Farrington, and in 2009 a quartet session billed simply Scott Hamilton, with the American tenor saxophonist, bassist Aldo Zunino and drummer Alfred Kramer. Later leader and co-leader records include Continuando (2012, with singer-songwriter Silvia Donati), Emanuele Maniscalco Meets Sandro Gibellini (2016) and When Your Drummer Has Gone (2016, with clarinetist Massimo Salvagnini), Fatsology (2017), a tribute to Fats Waller with Gianni Cazzola on drums and Alan Farrington on vocals, and Hallways (Remembering Jim Hall) (2017), credited to Gaetano Valli featuring Gibellini and pianist Giovanni Mazzarino. In 2021 he released The Boy Next Door as a trio with bassist Giulio Corini and Emanuele Maniscalco on drums and piano.

Across the 1990s and 2000s Gibellini was also a session guitarist on several albums by the pop singer Mina and appears on records by singers Rossana Casale and Bruno Lauzi; these sit alongside, rather than instead of, his jazz work. He has taught guitar at the Conservatorio Luca Marenzio in Brescia and the Conservatorio Francesco Venezze in Rovigo, performed as a member of the Italian All-Stars in New York and at the North Carolina International Jazz Festival in March 2000, and in 2005 served as principal guitar tutor at the Global Music Foundation's international jazz and world-music seminar. He continues to perform and record, including a 2025 trio recording project with Giulio Corini and Emanuele Maniscalco.

Gibellini's playing sits in a mainstream, standards-rooted jazz guitar tradition built through decades of work alongside touring American musicians (Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, Scott Hamilton, Gerry Mulligan, Mel Lewis) and the core players of the northern Italian jazz scene. His catalog as a leader moves between small-group swing and bebop repertoire (the Fats Waller tribute Fatsology, the Jim Hall tribute Hallways), his own compositions on trio and septet records such as Felix and La Banda Disegnata, and a parallel vein of Brazilian-songbook work developed over two decades with singer Barbara Casini, setting Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil repertoire in a jazz context. A long run of session work for the pop singer Mina and other Italian vocalists runs alongside this jazz output without displacing it.
