Massimo Pirone is a Rome-based trombonist, bass trombonist and tubist who has spent close to four decades moving between Italy's institutional jazz-orchestra world and its television, theater and film-scoring industries. After graduating from the conservatory, he began his career playing on major Italian television programs, including multiple editions of La Corrida, Sarabanda and the Sanremo Music Festival, and spent more than eighteen years in the pit orchestra for actor and director Gigi Proietti's theater productions. From 1987 he worked as a studio trombonist on the recording sessions for nearly every Ennio Morricone film score, alongside soundtrack work for composers Luis Bacalov and Nicola Piovani.

Pirone's jazz credits run in parallel with that studio career and go back at least to 1988, the year of his earliest Discogs-documented recording, on Roberto Pregadio's Le Musiche Da La Corrida. Through the 1990s and 2000s he became a regular contributor to pianist Riccardo Fassi's Tankio Band, appearing on its albums Notte (1991), Plays the Music of Frank Zappa (1995), Serial Killer (2001), Plays the Music of Eric Dolphy (2005, alongside saxophonist Achille Succi), Riccardo Fassi Tankio Band Meets Fabio Morgera (2016, with trumpeter Fabio Morgera), Plays Zappa: The Return of the Fat Chicken (2017) and Cum Grano Salis (2025). He is also Discogs-documented on Roberto Gatto's Plays Rugantino (2000), on tuba alongside trombonist Gianluca Petrella, and on the sextet album Luna Park (2000, EGEA), playing tuba alongside saxophonist Pietro Tonolo, clarinetist Gabriele Mirabassi, reedman Rossano Emili, trombonist Roberto Rossi and trumpeter Giampaolo Casati.

Pirone released his first album as a leader, [A Portrait Of Trombone], in 2004 on the Rome label Isma Record, a set of bebop and hard-bop standards recorded with a trombone section that also included Mario Corvini and pianist Riccardo Fassi. He followed it with Directly From The Heart (2010, Helikonia), a quintet date again featuring Fassi on piano and keyboards alongside trumpeter Claudio Corvini and saxophonists Eugenio Colombo and Sandro Satta. The same year he recorded Two Brothers (Point Of View Records) as a trombone duo with American studio veteran Bill Reichenbach, cut at Point Studio in Rome. A decade later, in 2020, he recorded 3Brosbones (Fresh Sound Records) with two more Los Angeles studio trombonists, Dick Nash and Alan Kaplan, a project that grew out of a friendship the three built up over repeated visits between Rome and Los Angeles; Pirone is the album's most heavily featured soloist and arranged its selection of songbook standards.

Alongside his own leader dates, Pirone is Discogs-documented in the trombone sections of two of Rome's institutional jazz orchestras: the Dino E Franco Piana Jazz Orchestra, on its 2008 Casa del Jazz release Omaggio A Armando Trovajoli (alongside trombonists Dino Piana and Mario Corvini, conductor Franco Piana and pianist Enrico Pieranunzi), and the Parco Della Musica Jazz Orchestra, heard on both discs of Casa del Jazz's Jazzitaliano Live 2007 series - one billed to saxophonist Rosario Giuliani with special guest Enrico Pieranunzi, the other to the orchestra itself with singers Irene Grandi and Simona Bencini. A separate 2006 session, Sun & Moon For Free (C.A.M. Jazz), credits Pirone on trombone alongside the co-billed trio of Marcello Sirignano, Stefano Di Battista and Danilo Rea.

Pirone's session work also crosses well outside jazz, with Discogs-documented credits behind singer-songwriters and pop artists including Antonello Venditti, Ornella Vanoni, Giorgio Gaber, Sergio Cammariere, Nicola Arigliano and Renato Zero, and on the 2006 studio album A Lot Of Livin' To Do, a tribute session led by drummer Riccardo Mei that also credits American trombonist Bill Watrous as featured soloist alongside Pirone and Italian trombonists Dino Piana and Aldo Bassi. Outside recording, Pirone has built a parallel career as a pedagogue: he translated and updated the Arban method for trombone for the Italian publisher Volonte & Co., wrote his own instructional book on trombone technique and jazz improvisation, and has given trombone and jazz-improvisation masterclasses around Italy. He has also led his own working groups in Rome, including a "Big Fat Band" co-led with vocalist Clara Simonoviez performing American songbook standards, one of several small-group projects alongside his own quartet.

Pirone's musical identity sits at the intersection of two separate tracks that run through his whole career: institutional big-band and orchestral jazz on one side, and the busy commercial world of Italian television, film-scoring and pop session work on the other. His leader albums are built on the vocabulary of postwar American trombone jazz - the repertoire on [A Portrait Of Trombone] draws on hard-bop and bebop staples associated with players like J.J. Johnson and Curtis Fuller - while his section work for the Dino E Franco Piana Jazz Orchestra and the Parco Della Musica Jazz Orchestra places him inside Rome's big-band and orchestral-jazz institutions alongside players such as Mario Corvini and Franco Piana. His two duo/trio projects with American studio trombonists, Bill Reichenbach on Two Brothers and Dick Nash and Alan Kaplan on 3Brosbones, sit squarely in a mainstream, songbook-standards idiom, foregrounding Pirone's own tone and phrasing against a rhythm section. Running underneath all of it is the same first-call studio versatility that has kept him working continuously in Rome's television, film and pop-session industries since the late 1980s.
