Vito Giordano is a Palermo trumpeter, flugelhornist, composer, bandleader and orchestra conductor who holds a trumpet diploma from the Conservatorio "Vincenzo Bellini" in Palermo. Early in his career he won competitions as a trumpeter with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana and at the city's Teatro Massimo. His path toward jazz began in 1979 in the basement venue of the Brass Group on Via Duca della Verdura, where a concert by saxophonist Dexter Gordon left him, in his own words, "transformed by pure magic," drawn to an informal atmosphere unlike anything in his classical training.
Giordano went on to become one of the Brass Group Foundation's own named core musicians. The Foundation's institutional history of its Orchestra Jazz Siciliana (OJS), Palermo's permanent, publicly backed big band, credits eight players - Giuseppe Costa, Giordano, Antonino Pedone, Pietro Pedone, Fabio Riina, Domenico Riina, Salvatore Pizzo and Salvatore Pizzurro - with having "guaranteed for over twenty years an orchestral sound characterized by their own recognizable sound." Since 1996 he has also served as Didactic Director of the Brass Group's own Music School in Palermo, and he assisted guest conductors Gunther Schuller and Bill Russo during the Foundation's European Jazz Orchestra courses. Since 2003 he has taught improvisation technique and ensemble music at the Bellini Conservatory itself, the same institution where he trained.
Giordano's own discography spans small-combo jazz, Dixieland and big-band work. His 1988 debut on record came as a sideman on the Costa & Cataldo Music Project's "Picture Number One" (Splasc(h) Records), alongside pianist Salvatore Bonafede and trombonist Salvatore Pizzo, and the same year he appeared on the single jazz-combo track of Pippo Cataldo's otherwise classical Sincronie. In 1999 he recorded Reflections No 2 with the Giuseppe Emmanuele Quintet, alongside saxophonist Pietro Tonolo. His own leader date, Flavours (2001, VideoRadio), paired him with an international rhythm section, pianist Paolo Di Sabatino, Cuban bassist Carlitos Del Puerto and Cuban drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. In the 2000s and 2010s he recorded with the Turin-based Torino Jazz Orchestra (Ow! In Honour of Gianni Basso, 2011; Jubilation, 2013, featuring Dusko Gojkovich) and with Claudio Lo Cascio's Sicilia Jazz Dixielanders and Sicilia Jazz Big Band on two Dixieland-tagged tribute projects to the New Orleans cornetist Nick La Rocca.
Giordano also carries forward the Brass Group's 2007 partnership with the Donnafugata winery. On Music & Wine Live (2007, Duplison), recorded with OJS and visiting American musicians Eliot Zigmund and Bill Moring, he is credited as both trumpeter and one of three arranger-conductors, alongside Antonino Pedone and Domenico Riina. He fronted his own group, with vocalist Carmen Avellone, pianist Diego Spitaleri, bassist/guitarist Fabio Lannino and drummer Ciccio Foresta, on 2 Of Us Live @ Brass (Da Vinci Jazz, recorded live in February and March 2019 at Palermo's Real Teatro Santa Cecilia, released 2020), and returned to the Donnafugata collaboration in 2022 as a curator on Rebirth, again alongside Spitaleri and Lannino as arrangers. His own biography also credits a recording made with Dusko Gojkovich's International Jazz Big Band on the ENJA label, titled A Handful o' Soul; this is not independently confirmed at the Discogs credit level, though a Spotify search result for a track titled "Balkan Blue" lists a credit reading "Vito Giordano, Michael Lutzeier, Dusko Goykovich, The International Jazz Orchestra," consistent with, but not conclusive proof of, that collaboration.
No birth date or birthplace for Giordano is publicly documented in any source checked, including Discogs, Wikipedia, AllMusic and All About Jazz.
Giordano's playing sits across several strands of the jazz tradition rather than one fixed style: Dixieland and New Orleans-revival material with Claudio Lo Cascio's ensembles, big-band writing and section work with the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana and Turin's Torino Jazz Orchestra, and contemporary small-combo jazz on his own leader date Flavours, recorded with a rhythm section steeped in Afro-Cuban jazz. A single credit on 2008's Made in Sicily - The Songs (Made In Sicily Orchestra), tagged by Discogs as both Jazz and Folk/World, shows him also working at the edge of a Sicilian folk-jazz crossover project; that side project is noted honestly here rather than folded into his core discography. His career-defining turn, by his own account, traces to a single 1979 concert by Dexter Gordon at the Brass Group, after a start in classical trumpet with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra and at Teatro Massimo.
