Third stream was named and defined by composer and French-hornist Gunther Schuller in a 1957 lecture, describing a deliberate merger of jazz improvisation with classical composition's forms and techniques, conceived as a genuine hybrid rather than either idiom simply borrowing from the other. It is marked by notated, classically structured compositions that leave room for jazz improvisation, often scored for mixed jazz-and-classical ensembles. Gunther Schuller and pianist John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet were its central architects and advocates.
