Angelo Comisso was born in 1970 in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in Italy's northeast corner, and grew up around jazz from the start: his father was a jazz trumpeter, and under his guidance Comisso was drawn to the music "fin da giovanissimo" (from a very young age), beginning a professional career at fifteen alongside internationally known musicians. He trained formally as a classical pianist at the Conservatorio "B. Marcello" in Venice, earning his diploma in 1992 after completing an artistic Liceo Musicale track there, and pursued composition study at the same institution.

His postgraduate path ran straight through American jazz education: a 1998 scholarship at the Hartford Conservatory in Connecticut, an advanced jazz tutorial the year before with drummer Gary Chaffee, pianist Bevan Manson and bassist Dave Santoro, and a Siena Jazz summer course in 1992. During a stretch working in the United States he took a job as a pianist for Walt Disney in Orlando, Florida, one of several unusual entries in a touring career that has since carried him through jazz festivals and broadcasts across Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Morocco, Great Britain, France, Israel, Taiwan and the United States, with appearances on RAI, RTS, BBC, WDR, NDR and Al Jazeera.

Since 2003 Comisso has co-led a trio with German trumpeter and composer Markus Stockhausen and drummer Christian Thomé, working in duo and trio formats under the name Lichtblick. The group made three Discogs-documented albums for the German label Aktivraum: the debut Lichtblick - Prima, Altrove... (2005), Es War Einmal... Istanti Infiniti... (2007, recorded at Studio Zerkall in May 2006), and Stabat Mater (2012), which expanded the trio with the women's chamber choir Coro Femminile da Camera Látomás, under conductor Diana D'Alessio, for a contemporary jazz setting of the medieval Stabat Mater Dolorosa text. Stabat Mater was cited among Jazzit magazine's 100 best CDs of the year and reviewed by All About Jazz's Eyal Hareuveni. Comisso and Stockhausen's collaboration continued afterward as the quartet Quadrivium, formed in 2015 with cellist Jörg Brinkmann, and on Stockhausen's own 2017 studio album Far Into the Stars, released internationally on Sony's Okeh label with Comisso credited on piano.

As a leader in his own right, Comisso founded the Angelo Comisso Trio in 1999 and released two albums under that banner, Towards Home (1999) and Sturm und Drang (2010), both cited by his own official biography as Jazzit magazine top-100 selections; he also recorded a solo piano album, Di Vini Fermenti Musicali (2007, Associazione Shéhérazade). His most recent working group is Numen, a piano trio formed with bassist Alessandro Turchet and drummer Luca Colussi that released its debut, self-titled album in 2021 on Artesuono (catalogue ART208), the Cavalicco studio and label run by engineer Stefano Amerio - the same engineer behind several records by Francesco Bearzatti's Tinissima Quartet. Discogs tags Numen "Contemporary Jazz."

Comisso's other long-running creative relationship is with tenor and soprano saxophonist and clarinetist Francesco Bearzatti, and it runs deeper than the duo album that made it public. The earliest Discogs-documented meeting between the two is a 1998 sideman date, Alessandro Zampini's Princess (Newport Studios), on which Comisso plays piano and Bearzatti plays tenor and soprano saxophone alongside drummer Zeno De Rossi - seventeen years before the two formally paired up as a duo. That duo's debut album, M'illumino di senso - Suite per la Grande Guerra 1915-1918, was released in May 2015 on the Blue Serge-Egea label; its title borrows Giuseppe Ungaretti's one-line 1917 poem, and the record itself is an eight-part suite, composed four-handed by both musicians with room left for improvisation, imagining a soldier's interior life across the centenary of Italy's entry into the First World War, from conscription notice to an imagined closing dance between soldiers of opposing armies. The duo performed the piece live at least as early as the Trieste jazz festival TriesteLovesJazz in 2014 and continued touring it through events including Veneto Jazz's "Terre Graffiate" series in 2018. Blue Serge itself, the Milan-based label founded by Sergio Cossu in 2003 that also released Comisso's Stabat Mater, is a record label rather than the name of the duo or a joint "project" the two lead together - a distinction worth making plainly, since the two records share a label imprint rather than a group name.

Alongside performing, Comisso has taught piano and jazz ensemble since 1995, currently at Trieste's Casa della Musica, and previously or concurrently at Padova's Modern Music Institute, the United World College of the Adriatic, the Bassano del Grappa Summer Jazz Workshop, and, in Pordenone, Fiume Veneto and San Vito al Tagliamento, at the Polinote cooperative. He has also composed two children's musical theatre works performed in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Comisso's own official biography describes his solo piano performances as blending "contemporary classical music, European jazz, and total improvisation," and that three-way description fits his catalogue as a whole better than any single genre label. The Stockhausen/Thomé trio work sits closest to European free improvisation and chamber music, drawing on Comisso's classical training as much as a jazz vocabulary - a fit reinforced by the independent classical-repertoire reference site stabatmater.info, which describes his 2012 Stabat Mater as recasting the medieval hymn in "modern, chamber jazz." His own site's biography also names British free-improvisation saxophonist Evan Parker among his collaborators, alongside Gianluigi Trovesi, Gianni Basso, Roberto Ottaviano and Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen, though none of these specific claims could be matched to a dated recording or Discogs credit in this pass (see notes.md) - real, sourced biographical claims, not independently verified connections.

The Bearzatti duo work draws on a different, more programmatic tradition: like Bearzatti's own Tinissima Quartet records, M'illumino di senso is a composed suite built around a single historical subject, here filtered through Comisso's classically grounded piano writing rather than Bearzatti's usual post-bop quartet frame. Taken together, the two strands of Comisso's career - the free-improvising European chamber trio and the programmatic historical suite - both draw on jazz's improvisational core while reaching outside it for form and material, which is the working definition of the crossover ground this profile's Subgenres tags (Third Stream, Chamber Jazz, European Free Jazz) are meant to describe.
