Claudio Quartarone was born in Catania, Sicily, on September 8, 1984. He began classical guitar studies at eight under Maestro Domenico Spada and was competing internationally within a year, winning enough prizes early on to be treated as a child prodigy on the Italian classical-guitar circuit. At nineteen, following a period exploring electronic and contemporary music, he encountered jazz, and by his own account it became his primary channel of expression from that point on.

His jazz education was formal and fast-moving: the Umbria Jazz Clinics in Perugia in 2006, where he studied under Ken Cervenka, Ron Savage and Sheryl Bailey, and then, in 2007, a scholarship from the Siena Jazz Foundation to represent Italy at the International Association of Schools of Jazz (I.A.S.J.) conference in Riga, Latvia - an award established in 1989 by saxophonist Dave Liebman. The Riga gathering produced a commemorative album and DVD, Jazz in Riga, and put Quartarone in a room with faculty that included saxophonist Claudio Fasoli and trumpeter Enrico Rava.

It was at the Siena Jazz seminars that same year that Rava first heard him play. Rava was impressed enough to invite the twenty-two-year-old into a touring ensemble he was assembling, billed as the Enrico Rava Special Edition, which performed at several Italian jazz festivals - a genuinely documented touring connection, not a passing name-drop, corroborated independently by Quartarone's own official biography, a Birdbox Records artist profile, Guitar Club Magazine, and a quote Rava gave to Corriere della Sera at the time: "Un chitarrista veramente incredibile di 20, 21 anni, penso non ho mai sentito in Italia uno così, si chiama Quartarone, viene da Catania" ("A truly incredible guitarist at 20, 21 years old - I don't think I've ever heard anyone like him in Italy; his name is Quartarone, he comes from Catania"). No studio recording under that touring billing has been found in Discogs or elsewhere, so the connection is reported here as a documented live/touring credit rather than a discography entry (see notes.md); it is also a distinct, earlier, differently-staffed project from Rava's 2021 ECM album Edizione Speciale ("Special Edition" in Italian), which features a different lineup entirely and has no connection to Quartarone. Quartarone has since described what he took from the experience: that on stage "something must happen - you can't just play the piece and leave, everything must be open to possibilities."

Beginning in 2008, Quartarone signed with RAI Trade, the recording arm of Italy's public broadcaster, for a run of three albums: Even Eight, The Third Boss Guitar (2009) and Elevator (2010). Of the three, only The Third Boss Guitar has been independently located in Discogs (credited to the VideoRadio imprint, Discogs-tagged Jazz), matching a contemporary Adnkronos wire item announcing its RAI Trade release; Even Eight and Elevator are documented only through Quartarone's own biographical materials and could not be independently dated or verified against Discogs or another discography database (see notes.md).

Subliminal followed in 2012 (Comar 23, Discogs-tagged Jazz), then Mastermind in 2013 (Sucu Music Netlabel, a free digital release Discogs tags across Electronic, Jazz and Rock, with Jazzdance and Post Rock as its style tags) and a guest slot the following year on the netlabel's various-artists set Sucusauce Vol. 1 (2014). Changes (2018, Workin' Label), a return to solo guitar, compiles compositions built live on stage and, per its own promotional description, never repeated the same way twice; that same year, in January 2018, Quartarone published Metodo per improvvisare chitarristi ("Method for Improvising Guitarists," Workin' Label), a jazz-improvisation instruction manual aimed at guitarists who already have foundational harmonic knowledge - independently confirmed via a Guitar Club Magazine summary of the book. A further solo digital release, Equilibrium, followed in 2019.

In 2022 Quartarone released Weiss Noten (Aulicus Classics), a solo classical-guitar composition album that Discogs tags Classical/Contemporary rather than Jazz - a genuine departure from his jazz catalog, disclosed here rather than folded into his jazz identity. The same year brought the first fruit of an ongoing duo with fellow guitarist Umberto Fiorentino: Anamorfosi (2022, Birdbox Records), recorded in a single full-day session at Nightingale Studios in November 2019 with one additional track added before release, pairs Fiorentino's semi-acoustic guitar with Quartarone's classical guitar across a mix of standards (including "Out of Nowhere" and "In a Sentimental Mood") and originals. The duo's second album, II, followed in 2024 on the same label, described in press coverage as built from a shared blues-form foundation. Fiorentino - a well-documented figure in Italian jazz guitar in his own right, credited elsewhere in this campaign's own pre-vetting research as a teacher of several other Sicilian jazz musicians - has no jazzprofiles.com profile of his own yet; this is flagged as a strong candidate for a future build (see notes.md).

More recently, Quartarone became the subject of a dedicated electric-guitar plugin, Quartarone Guitar Reveries (2020, Valiant Samples, an Australian developer), modeled on his fingerstyle touch - reported as the first such plugin built around an Italian guitarist. His own biographical materials also describe newer, less-verified collaborations and projects: a "Rebirth" session with the Nairobi-based ensemble Mackinlay Music, a 2024 release titled Mediterraneo, and named connections to keyboardist Jordan Rudess, saxophonist Francesco Cafiso, pianist Giovanni Guidi, drummer Yussef Dayes and Turkish saz player Cenk Erdoğan. None of these could be independently corroborated via Discogs, a dated concert record, or a source independent of Quartarone's own promotional materials during this build, and they are reported here as self-sourced rather than verified (see notes.md) - this applies in particular to the Cafiso and Guidi mentions, since both are already profiled on this site and the campaign's standing practice is not to convert an unconfirmed name-drop into a cross-link. In January 2026 he conducted guitar masterclasses at the Nairobi Conservatory of Music.

Quartarone's catalog runs on two tracks that rarely overlap. One is squarely jazz by Discogs' own tagging: The Third Boss Guitar, Subliminal, Changes, and both Umberto Fiorentino duo albums are all Jazz-genre-tagged, and Mastermind mixes a Jazz tag with Electronic and Rock. The other is the more purely classical, compositional side that produced Weiss Noten - a Discogs-Classical release with no jazz tag at all. Quartarone himself resists a clean label for any of it: in one interview he put it plainly, "La mia musica non è jazz... ho sfruttato la concezione americana per poi creare il mio mondo sonoro ma non mi sono fatto incastrare dentro uno stile" ("My music isn't jazz - I used the American [jazz] conception to build my own sound world, but I never let myself get locked into one style"). That statement is offered here as his own framing rather than a disqualifying one: his formal training, his festival-circuit breakthrough, and the large majority of his own catalog all run through jazz vocabulary and jazz-specific labels and institutions, even as he treats the idiom as a starting point rather than a destination. The Fiorentino duo project sits closest to a straight-ahead identity, pairing two guitar voices - one semi-acoustic, one classical - over standards and originals; Changes, by contrast, leans into spontaneous, unrepeatable live composition, and Mastermind pushes furthest into electronic and post-rock textures.
