Dino Piana grew up in Refrancore, a small town near Asti in Piedmont, in a family of confectioners. He started on trumpet at seven in his hometown's band, tried the accordion, and switched to trombone at fifteen, eventually settling on the valve trombone as his lifelong instrument rather than the more common slide model. He found jazz the way a lot of Italians of his generation did: through German radio broadcasts carrying Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, introduced to the records by his wife.
By the mid-1950s he was already playing jam sessions in Turin alongside a teenage trumpeter named Enrico Rava, a partnership that would resurface more than sixty years later on Piana's final album. His professional break came in 1959, when his Quintetto di Torino competed in "La Coppa del Jazz," a RAI-sponsored radio jazz contest, and Piana stood out as its strongest soloist. Work with Gorni Kramer's television orchestra followed, and so did his central role in what became one of Italy's most prolific jazz units: the Basso-Valdambrini Quintet, led alongside tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso and trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini, remembered in the Italian jazz press as standard-bearers of bebop in a country still building its own jazz scene. Così Con Dino Piana (1962, Ricordi), his first album under his own name, came out of this period, a twelve-tune session for quartet and quintet built around Renato Sellani on piano.
In 1969 Piana joined the RAI's own orchestra, where he stayed for the next 26 years, giving him a steady home base for studio and broadcast work while he kept freelancing across Italian jazz, film-score sessions, and pop dates. He turns up on releases as different as Ornella Vanoni's Ai Miei Amici Cantautori and Riz Ortolani's 5 Figli Di Cane soundtrack, and inside big bands led by Giorgio Gaslini, including 1971's Newport in Milan. His international dance card grew alongside the Italian one. In 1978, on Charles Mingus's Cumbia & Jazz Fusion, Piana is the trombonist on "Music for 'Todo Modo,'" the second of the album's two extended pieces, written by Mingus for an Italian political thriller and recorded with a large ensemble of American and Italian players. The following year he co-led Duo "Bones" (1979, Red Record) with the American trombonist Kai Winding, trading solos over eight tracks with a rhythm section that included pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and bassist Giovanni Tommaso. In between, on May 23, 1973, Piana sat in the trombone section alongside fellow trombonist Frank Rosolino for Jazz Concerto, a big-band program recorded at RAI's Rome auditorium with visiting Americans Tony Scott and Conte Candoli (commercially reissued in 2009 as Live In Rome 1973). Italian and international press profiles from later in his life also credit him with festival and broadcast dates alongside Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, and Kenny Clarke, and the touring big bands of Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, and Bob Brookmeyer; in one of his last interviews Piana himself put it plainly: "Ho collaborato con tanti musicisti italiani e ho avuto il privilegio di suonare con i migliori artisti americani, da Chet Baker a Mingus" ("I worked with many Italian musicians, and I had the privilege of playing with the best American artists, from Chet Baker to Mingus"). Those specific pairings with Baker, Mulligan, and Clarke don't show up in a shared recording credit the way the Mingus, Winding, and Rosolino dates do, so they're carried here as his own and the press's account rather than as documented sessions.
Starting in 1978, Piana built a working group around his son Franco Piana, a trumpeter, flugelhorn player, and composer, first as a sextet with Oscar Valdambrini and later, from around 2000, as the full Dino & Franco Piana Jazz Orchestra. That father-son partnership became the frame for the rest of his recording life, running through 2021's Reflections (Alfa Music), with Roberto Gatto on drums and Dario Deidda on bass, and Al Gir Dal Bughi (Parco Della Musica Records), released in February 2021 when Piana was 90. Its title, Piedmontese dialect for "around the boogie," refers to the story of his first meeting with Rava at that Turin jam session decades earlier, and the album reunited them on record nine years after Rava's guest turn on the 2012 septet album Seven, with Roberto Gatto again on drums. Piana kept leading the Dino e Franco Piana Jazz Orchestra until a few months before his death and returned to perform in Refrancore most every August. He died in Rome on November 6, 2023, three months after turning 93, survived by his children Paola and Franco.
Piana played valve trombone almost exclusively, a choice that set his sound apart from the slide players who dominated Italian jazz brass, and critics reached for the same comparison more than once: Juan Tizol, Duke Ellington's own valve trombonist, prized for the same combination of a rounded, vocal tone and "exceptional swing sense in both slow and fast tempos." His stylistic home base was bebop and swing, formed in the Basso-Valdambrini Quintet's bop-first repertoire and carried through decades of big-band section and solo work with the RAI Orchestra and Giorgio Gaslini's ensembles. Discogs' own genre tagging on his leader records bears this out: Così Con Dino Piana is filed under Swing, and 2021's Al Gir Dal Bughi under Bop and Contemporary Jazz. What distinguishes Piana's catalogue from a straight bebop or swing lineage is how long it stayed active and how far it stretched. The same trombonist who broke through in a 1959 radio contest was still recording new albums at 90, and the ensemble work along the way ranged from a Mingus-scored large ensemble to an American trombonist's duo session to his own son's jazz orchestra.
