Nu jazz emerged in the early-to-mid 1990s, largely in European club and electronic-music scenes, as jazz musicians and electronic producers converged to blend jazz harmony and instrumentation with electronic dance production, synthesizers, and sampling. Compared with its close cousin acid jazz, nu jazz tends to favor steady, programmed grooves beneath jazz harmony over extended improvisation, while still often incorporating live instruments like saxophone, trumpet, and piano. Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and the French duo St Germain are among its most closely associated artists.
