Yusuke Shima (島裕介) is a trumpeter, flugelhorn and flute player, composer, arranger and producer who has built his career on three tracks at once: session and sideman work, a long run of albums under his own name, and a record label of his own. He was born in Osaka on 12 February 1975 and grew up in Tokyo. He went from Tokyo Metropolitan Toyama High School to the Faculty of Science and Technology at Keio University and finished a master's degree at its graduate school. His first job was at Panasonic. He left after two years and nine months and, in 2002, began working as a full-time professional musician.
His early years were spent in other people's bands and in a duo. He played in support of the band EGO-WRAPPIN' from 2002 to 2006, according to his Japanese Wikipedia entry, and an interview with Tower Records' Mikiki also lists EGO-WRAPPIN' among his early employers. In 2006 he formed Shima&ShikouDUO with the pianist Shikou Ito. Their first album, Ame no 246 (雨の246), appeared that year. By his own biography the duo played the Fuji Rock Festival in 2007 and Tokyo Jazz in 2008, reached number one on Tower Records' national J-Jazz chart, and made a major-label debut on Victor in 2009 with Poetry. Discogs documents four duo albums between 2006 and 2012, among them Road To The Deep North (Nature Bliss, 2008) and Kokyu (呼吸, MOS Sound, 2012).
In 2010 he started the project that gave him his widest audience. Silent Jazz Case (Rambling Records, released 10 June 2010) was an original-music leader project with a rotating cast. "Silent," he explained to Mikiki in 2015, is a stand-in for "cool," and the point was to keep the trumpet at the center of every track rather than let a vocalist turn the other instruments into accompaniment. The name also became his production credit on a run of vocal and compilation records. From 2011 he wrote, according to Japanese Wikipedia, a four-year column on trumpet recordings for the magazine Jazz Japan, and in 2013 he began a series under his own name called Meikyoku wo Fuku (名曲を吹く, "playing famous songs"): Ink Blue (Athor Harmonics Studio ATHO-4006) in August and a second volume (ATHO-4008) in October, both full of standards and film themes played with a piano or guitar rhythm section. The same year, on 1 June, he co-led Tone with the singer and guitarist Chika Takahashi (Wangan Music Records, WMRF-1006), arranging, producing, writing and playing trumpet, flugelhorn and flute on it.
Silent Jazz Case 2 arrived in 2015 on the label Playwright (PWT-015), released under his own name, with musicians from the Playwright label, Kohei Morita, Iori Kimura and Tsukasa Inoue among them. Three of its tracks, "Quiet Pho," "Steppin' The Doisuthep" and "Sukhumvit Street," came from an October 2014 trip that took him to Chiang Mai and Bangkok, a link to Thailand that returned in 2018 with the live-leaning Yusuke Shima in Bangkok, recorded with the Sunny Rattana Trio. In 2016 he founded his own label, Todoroki Jazz Records (等々力ジャズレコーズ), which has since produced more than ten releases by other artists. One of its early releases, Daisuke Yoshioka & The Express (2016), has him on trumpet and flugelhorn with the producer credit, per Discogs. That year he also recorded Wa Jazu (~和ジャズ~, Athor Harmonics ATHO-4011) with the Tsugaru shamisen player Yutaka Oyama, with Jose Colon on cajon and Junichi Saito on guitar. A second volume followed in 2018. Silent Jazz Case 3 (Playwright, PWT-035) came out in 2017 with another rotating lineup that included the pianists Yusuke Kono and Shoko Mochiyama.
Prayer (Playwright PWT-058, 22 May 2019) is the record that took his name furthest. He made it with the beatmaker re:plus without ever meeting him: re:plus built each backing track, Shima recorded trumpet over it, and the audio files went back and forth online. re:plus has described the album as a prayer dedicated to Nujabes. His own biography says it has passed five million plays on Spotify. In October 2019 he played the Japanese national anthem on solo trumpet before the final of the Rakuten Open tennis tournament, a performance he posted to his YouTube channel. The fourth Meikyoku wo Fuku volume, with the flamenco guitarist Jin Oki and the pianist Josei, also appeared in 2019.
From Silent Jazz Case 4 (Playwright PWT-084, 7 July 2021) the project became a working quartet: Shima on trumpet, flugelhorn, flute and trombone, with Yusuke Kono on piano, Mutsumi Sugiura on bass and Jun Otsu on drums. Shima has said the album was heard in more than 160 countries and passed a million Spotify plays. It includes a reading of Bobby Hutcherson's "Montara." The band recorded Silent Jazz Case 5 in a new studio with a well-kept New York Steinway, and it was released on 24 July 2024, with a release party in Roppongi on 27 September that year. In parallel he runs Wind Loop Case, a separate trackmaker project and solo sideline built from sampled keyboards, looped drums and, on the second album, live bass from Sugiura. Wind Loop Case 1 appeared in September 2023 and Wind Loop Case 2 digitally on 19 December 2025, and Playwright issued both together on one CD on 21 January 2026. Japanese Wikipedia credits him with China tours in 2023 and 2024, eleven concerts in eight cities, alongside re:plus. In 2026 he became a part-time lecturer in the Jazz and Popular Music department of Shobi Music College in Tokyo, teaching trumpet, flute and desktop music production. He turned 51 in February 2026, and a new single credited to Silent Jazz Case, "Sun Song," was released on 1 July 2026.
Alongside the albums runs the session work that keeps him on the road: his own biography counts more than 900 recorded songs and at least 100 commercials, and says he plays close to 150 live dates a year, in Japan and abroad.
The trumpeters he names as influences are Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Kenny Dorham and Donald Byrd, hard-bop and post-bop voices, but the music he is known for sits somewhere softer. One reviewer of Silent Jazz Case 5 describes the music as bright, melodic jazz fusion that edges toward easy listening, a modern club-jazz sound built on a clean melodic horn line over a piano trio. The 2015 Mikiki interview calls the first record a "new jazz" album and the series post-club jazz. Prayer and Wind Loop Case go further in that direction: Discogs tags Prayer with the style Jazzy Hip-Hop, and an interview about Wind Loop Case describes it as laid-back, loop-based jazzy hip-hop made for relaxed listening.
The Meikyoku wo Fuku albums, the shamisen duo records with Yutaka Oyama and the flamenco-guitar record with Jin Oki show the other side of the same player: a straightforward, lyrical trumpet and flugelhorn tone applied to standards, film themes and folk songs. His approach to arrangement is to keep restraint in the foreground, a habit he mentions in connection with Prayer, where he says he tends to overdo things and prefers to hold back.
Readers should treat this profile with its scope in mind. A large part of his working life is in commercial recording, vocal-project production and easy-listening club jazz, and the soft end of the idiom is the end that his audience knows best. His leader catalogue is nonetheless almost entirely tagged Jazz on Discogs, and his bands, label and teaching are all rooted in jazz.
