Samba-jazz developed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s and early 1960s, alongside and overlapping with bossa nova, as Brazilian musicians combined samba rhythms with the harmonic vocabulary and improvisational drive of American bebop and hard bop, often performed in nightclub gafieiras. Compared with the softer, more intimate bossa nova, samba-jazz is played with greater energy, faster tempos, and more overt instrumental improvisation, typically in piano-bass-drums trio format. Groups such as the Sambalanceo Trio and Sambrasa Trio were central to establishing the style.
