Gypsy jazz, also known as jazz manouche, originated in Paris in the early 1930s, centered on the Quintette du Hot Club de France, which paired the guitar virtuosity of Romani musician Django Reinhardt with violinist Stephane Grappelli. Distinctively, it is built around an all-string lineup of acoustic guitars, violin, and upright bass rather than horns or drums, driven by the rhythmic strummed accompaniment known as la pompe. Django Reinhardt remains the genre's singular defining figure and the primary model for its guitar style.
