Giuliano Perin is a vibraphonist, pianist and bandleader from Padua, born in 1956, who has worked as a physician (a dentist) alongside a jazz career that took off in earnest in the 1990s. He began classical piano study at six and turned to jazz after hearing his older brother's records; in a 2022 Jazzit interview he names Bartók, Stravinsky and Debussy among his influences. His official biography lists jazz courses and seminars with Ran Blake, Franco D'Andrea, Stefano Battaglia and Barry Harris, study at the Manhattan School with Harold Danko and Gary Dial, and coursework at the New School in New York with Dave Samuels. Samuels and the vibraphonist David Friedman are the two vibraphone mentors he names in the Jazzit interview.

His first band was Electrik Workshop, an electric jazz group he led from 1989 to 1993; it won the Il Gazzettino competition and made the album Right Up (1993). Since 1998 he has directed groups from trio to sextet and has taught jazz in schools and for the Agimus association. He plays in the Thelonious Monk Big Band directed by pianist Marcello Tonolo, and Discogs credits him on vibraphone on its album Night Over (Caligola, 2007), alongside Davide Ragazzoni on drums. He also founded the Royal Big Band of Padua, which made two albums for Velut Luna in 2003 and 2004 under conductor Benny Lamonica; both were combined in the two-CD set Tribute To The American Songbook For Jazz Orchestra (2014), on which Discogs credits him on piano, vibraphone and as a producer. Trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso and tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso are guests on that set.

The core of his own discography is on the Caligola label. Into The Vibes (2004) was his debut as a leader, a quartet record with classical guitarist Ermanno Signorelli that Caligola's notes describe as a homage to Samuels. Flexibility (2005) brought in the rhythm section of bassist Luciano Milanese and drummer Massimo Chiarella, with Tonolo on piano, Maurizio Scomparin on trumpet, Jacopo Jacopetti on tenor saxophone and Lamonica on trombone; it was recorded at Cat Sound Studio in Badia Polesine on 4 and 5 January 2005. That working band returned for Passion & Reason (2007), which adds saxophonist Neil Leonard, a Berklee teacher, and Samuels as guest marimbist on two tracks, with cover notes by the critic Franco Fayenz. I Remember Palladio (Massima Cubatura) (2010) is the same sextet, and Ménage à trois (2013), recorded in April 2012, is a piano-trio record on which he plays piano, vibraphone and marimba by overdubbing. His official site quotes Fayenz praising his touch and phrasing and the RAI presenter Adriano Mazzoletti calling him a vibraphonist with no equal beyond Italy.

Alongside the Caligola sextet he has led a run of small groups for Cat Sound Records. The Good Vibes Quartet, a vibraphone-and-guitar group with guitarist Stefano Bassato, bassist Giuseppe Pilotto and Chiarella, recorded Coming Back (2007), Pezzi di Luna (2009, a collaboration with the Statale 11 cultural association that paired the music with contemporary jewelry) and Sweet Lines (2012). A later five-piece version with pianist Luciano Buosi, bassist Franco Lion and drummer Daniele Scambia made My Favourite Colours (2016), which the group premiered at a jazz festival in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The South Project (2014) is a music-and-theater collaboration between Veneto and Calabrian musicians, and in the swing quintet Swing Out 5et he plays piano on Scratching Cats (2018).

Some Other Spring (2020) is a set of spring-themed standards: he recorded piano-trio arrangements with Lion, Scambia and trumpeter Scomparin, then overdubbed vibraphone and marimba, and the actor Bruno Lovadina recites poems and prose between the pieces. Jazzit published an interview with him about it on 10 March 2022. His other projects include a sextet with Leonard, the physician-musician quartet The Modern Jazz Doctors and Mallet Madness, a vibraphone-and-marimba group with his son, the vibraphonist Giovanni Perin, bassist Franco Testa and Ragazzoni on drums, in which the two mallet players trade instruments.

His biography lists him among the Jazzit Top Ten award winners and in Flavio Caprera's Dizionario del jazz italiano, and says he has been a guest of RAI and represented Italy at the Italian Cultural Institutes in London and Strasbourg. Its list of collaborators includes Italian musicians such as Gianni Basso, Dado Moroni, Fabrizio Bosso, Francesco Bearzatti and Gianni Cazzola and the trumpeter Claudio Roditi, alongside Samuels and Leonard. He also works in poetry and theater, pairing music with actors and poets, and directs cultural events.

Perin plays in a mainstream, bop-rooted idiom for the vibraphone, and Caligola's notes tie Flexibility to the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, with a fluid swing that in its quartet tracks recalls the Modern Jazz Quartet. He names Terry Gibbs as an influence alongside Samuels; "For Keeps" on Flexibility is a Gibbs composition and "Paul's Cause" on I Remember Palladio is by the vibraphonist Teddy Charles. The Good Vibes Quartet repertoire follows the standards favored by Red Norvo, Terry Gibbs, Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton, and Sweet Lines draws on Cal Tjader, Lou Donaldson, George Shearing and Sonny Rollins.

The piano is his first instrument, and his records regularly put it beside the vibraphone: Ménage à trois and Some Other Spring are both piano-trio projects with overdubbed mallets. He often reworks his own earlier tunes, and four of the nine tracks on Ménage à trois are arrangements of pieces from Into The Vibes. The albums also carry a recurring light-music strand, from Italian songs to the Honeybus tune "I Can't Let Maggie Go" on I Remember Palladio. Outside jazz, he has appeared as a guest on a rock and folk album by the band Fonetica (eppure, 2014).
