Henghel Gualdi was a clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and bandleader born on 4 July 1924 in San Martino in Rio, in the Reggio Emilia lowlands, and based in Bologna from the mid-1950s until his death there on 16 June 2005. Italian Wikipedia opens its entry by saying that many consider him the best Italian jazz clarinetist of all time, and the Discogs artist entry carries the same line. He is also a figure who never stayed inside one lane: the same catalog holds swing and Dixieland records, a run of ballroom (liscio) and light-orchestra dance albums, children's-festival and television themes, and library music. Discogs lists 158 credits under the artist entry alone, plus 66 more under his orchestra, small-group and big-band entities.

He began in a town band at age 10 and studied clarinet at the Achille Peri Conservatory in Reggio Emilia under Augusto Battaglia, earning a lower-level diploma. His father Roberto, a trombonist who played beside him in local bands, died in 1947. During the Second World War he was drawn to American big bands, taking the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey orchestras as models, and in 1944 he played in a military band alongside the violinist Paolo Borciani of the Quartetto Italiano and the choirmaster Giuseppe Guastalla. After the war, needing to support a large family, he worked the ballrooms of the region as a liscio player. In 1948 he joined Ruggero Oppi's ensemble, replacing the clarinetist Aldo Trentini, and through that group played on records for the Compagnia Generale del Disco (CGD) label by singers such as Jula De Palma and Teddy Reno. Discogs credits him on clarinet on Reno's CGD shellac of "Begin The Beguine" and "Stormy Weather," and Italian Wikipedia adds that the pianist Lelio Luttazzi worked on that session.

By 1952 he was with Paolo Zavallone's group, where he met the singer Luciana Sasdelli; they married on 8 October 1955 and he moved to Bologna. The 1950s were his radio decade. His orchestra broadcast the Rai program La Bacchetta d'Oro from Bologna's Settimo Cielo on 8 December 1953, and in 1954 he won the Rai "Bacchetta d'Oro Pezziol" competition, ahead of the orchestras of Peppino Principe and Nino Donzelli. In 1957 he won the "Benny Goodman italiano" prize, beating three other finalists, among them the alto saxophonist and clarinetist Glauco Masetti. Goodman was his lifelong model; his own account, repeated in the biography on his official site, is that they met in Rome when Goodman came to record for a film, and in 1978 he released Dedicato a Benny Goodman (Centotre). His calling-card pieces were "Stardust," "Estrelita" and "St. Louis Blues," and "Passeggiando per Brooklyn," which Discogs notes served as the theme of the radio program Un altro giorno.

The Saint Louis College of Music's jazz archive places him after the war in the circle of musicians who grew up in Italy's hot clubs, alongside the pianists Lelio Luttazzi, Piero Angela and Piero Umiliani, the accordionist Gianni Coscia, the guitarist Franco Cerri and the saxophonist Attilio Donadio. The same archive, Italian Wikipedia and his official biography say that in the postwar decades he worked with American visitors including Rex Stewart, Bill Coleman, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Sidney Bechet, Albert Nicholas, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson and Gerry Mulligan, and that he played alongside Louis Armstrong at the 1968 Sanremo Festival. Those are biographical claims. No Discogs credit ties him to any of those American musicians, so none is treated here as a documented recording connection. A Wikimedia Commons photograph dated 1950, captioned at Viareggio, shows him on clarinet in a band with Bill Coleman on trumpet.

In 1962 he took over the direction of the Zecchino d'Oro children's song festival at Bologna's Teatro Antoniano and, according to Italian Wikipedia, was confirmed the following year, when the event moved into a new television studio; his official biography gives a longer tenure, 1962 to 1965. Discogs lists him on the 1961 and 1962 Zecchino d'Oro records, credited with orchestration and with the orchestra. In the summer of 1967 he was a guest on the Rai 1 prime-time show Lei non si preoccupi. His recorded output in this period runs through small-group singles for Sahara, Sabrina and the Milano Record Company, most of them Discogs-tagged Jazz or Swing, alongside Latin-dance and light-orchestra sides.

The 1970s and 1980s were the busiest recording years. He made I Miei Cavalli Di Battaglia on his own HG Record label in 1971, with Annibale Modoni on piano and vibraphone and Otello Cervi on trumpet and trombone, then a string of releases for Cetra and for the Bologna publisher Centotre (the "103" of the catalog). The jazz peak among them is Now (Carosello, 1976), in the label's "Jazz From Italy" series, which Discogs credits with Emilio Soana on trumpet, Modoni on vibraphone, Mario Rusca and Ettore Righello on piano, and Lino Patruno and Giancarlo Pillot as creative directors; Gualdi plays tenor saxophone and clarinet. In 1978 he wrote the opening and closing themes for Pupi Avati's Rai television drama Jazz Band, "Jazz Band" and "Sweet Time." Discogs credits Amedeo Tommasi as director and arranger on the 45 of those themes, and the Saint Louis archive lists Tommasi, Marcello Rosa, Alessio Urso, Nardo Giardina, Gianni Sanjust and Avati himself among the players on the soundtrack. Italian Wikipedia says the tune "Jazz Band" later closed the football program 90º Minuto, and Discogs notes the same on the Centotre compilation Jazz Band & Fantasie. Tommasi is credited again as writer, arranger and conductor on Gualdi's 1979 single from the television series Cinema!!!, and as arranger on the 1997 CD Cinema In Tv - Dedicato A Pupi Avati. On a 1975 45 led by Tommasi with his "Tema Del Barone" from the Avati film La mazurka del barone, della santa e del fico fiorone, Gualdi's Complesso plays "La Mazurca Del Fico Fiorone," which Gualdi composed. Italian Wikipedia counts five film soundtracks for Avati in all.

From the 1980s he was also a regular guest of the Doctor Dixie Jazz Band, the Bologna traditional-jazz group around the trumpeter Nardo Giardina that gathered at its own cantina, the Doctor Dixie, and that Avati fictionalized in Jazz Band. The Saint Louis archive says he appeared with Renzo Arbore and Avati at the band's Umbria Jazz set in 1984, and a festival upload of that concert lists Arbore, Avati, Paolo Conte, Giardina and Gualdi. Discogs credits him on clarinet on the Doctor Dixie record A Nice Summer (Speedy Co., 1987, with the trombonist Giordano Balboni, the pianist Teo Ciavarella and the vocalist Alberta Malagola), names him a featured guest on Let Me See (Centotre, 1997, where Lucio Dalla, Conte, Avati and Arbore are credited the same way), and lists him on the group's Woody, The Band & The Friends (1988) and later anthologies.

His records under his own name in the same years mix repertoires deliberately. Nel Cuore Della Musica (Fonit Cetra, 1989) is a small-group jazz and standards date with the guitarist Jimmy Villotti, the trombonist Emer Viola, the bassist Luciano Milanese and the pianist Annibale Modoni, who also wrote for it; Contrasti (Centotre, 1981), billed to his Big Band, pairs a saxophone section with a rhythm section for a set that Discogs tags Ragtime, Latin Jazz and Easy Listening; and library and promo LPs for Nuovo Repertorio Editoriale, such as Dallo Swing Al Tipico (1990), pair swing with liscio, beguine and samba. In 1985 he co-wrote a method for jazz improvisation on the clarinet, Improvvisiamo insieme, with Giuseppe Codeluppi for Ricordi, out of his teaching of jazz clarinet at the CEPAM music school in Reggio Emilia. In 1989 the tenor Luciano Pavarotti, according to Italian Wikipedia, persuaded him to fly, which he had avoided, to join Pavarotti's American tour. In 1995 he recorded Together In Concert with the flutist Andrea Griminelli, live in Correggio on 1 September, and appeared as one of two clarinetists, with Gianni Sanjust, on Lino Patruno & The Jazz Stars Of Italy's Live In San Marino (Carosello), alongside Romano Mussolini, Carlo Loffredo, Gil Cuppini and Enzo Randisi. In 1996 he published an autobiography, Poteva andare meglio (Guaraldi).

Later records return to dance music: one of his last own-name albums, Insieme È Più ...Ballo (Azzurra Music, 2004), is a liscio set with the accordionist Ruggero Passarini. His final piece, "Frizzantino," written with Dante Torricelli, is dedicated to the Bourbon Street Dixie Band of Cremona. He died of a heart attack at his home in Bologna on 16 June 2005, three weeks after his last concert, and was buried in San Martino in Rio at his own request. He had been made an honorary citizen of the town in 1984, and in January 2005 Reggio Emilia gave him its tricolor flag as one of its notable natives. A December 2024 concert at Sanremo's Palafiori marked the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

The Rome newspaper Il Tempo, in its obituary, called him a "sopraffino clarinettista dixieland" and said jazz purists had underrated him, partly because he would not give up hot jazz and swing for newer fashions and partly because of his forays into light music and dance music.

Among later musicians, the clarinetist Davide Sgarra has said that a chart of Gualdi's, "Jazz Band," was part of his first jazz lessons, and the saxophonist Achille Succi lists a 1986 Henghel Gualdi workshop among his early training. Both accounts come from those musicians' own biographies.

Gualdi's jazz identity was swing and Dixieland clarinet in the line of Benny Goodman, with a warm, legato tone that the conductor Giacomo Soave, quoted in a 2017 profile, described as playing the clarinet "as if it were a violin." The models he names are the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey orchestras, Goodman, and, in his tribute records, Duke Ellington. Dedicato A Duke Ellington (Centotre, 1980) reworks "Mood Indigo," "Caravan," "Sophisticated Lady" and "Take The 'A' Train," and its Discogs credits name a group called the Blu Music orchestra. His Big Band and Orchestra records ("In The Mood," "Moonlight Serenade," "Tiger Rag," "Petite Fleur") are arranger's swing for dancing rather than improvisers' jazz.

Any fair account has to hold two things at once. He was a jazz clarinetist by reputation, by training in the Italian hot-club circle and by the majority of his Discogs genre tags, which list Jazz on 34 of the 69 Discogs releases credited to him as main artist; and he also made ballroom, easy-listening and television music, including the Tutti In Pista liscio albums, Latin dance singles and a run of Zecchino d'Oro and television themes. The label "Easy Listening" is the most common style tag on his releases (15 of 69). The Il Tempo obituary makes the same point from the critics' side.
